Mufti Abu Layth holds that Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim contain some reports that are not acceptable, and that a report should be judged by its content as well as its chain.
“it is undeniable that the books like sahkari and sah Muslim it is undeniable that they have unacceptable Hadith in them”
Mufti Abu Layth holds that the six-and-nine report conflicts with at least three other reports in Sahih al-Bukhari about Aisha's age.
“first of all that clashes with at least three other Hadith inkari so when you've got that already straight away you've it it clashes with three other Hadith inkari”
Mufti Abu Layth holds that the six-and-nine report rests on Hisham ibn Urwa's later Iraqi transmission, is not transmitted by any Madinan compiler, and is contradicted by Asma's reported age, which puts Aisha at about eighteen.
“you backtrack and you take away 10 years and it makes Aisha you're talking in her late teens at the time of her marriage whether she was approximately around 18”
Mufti Abu Layth says the prominence of the six-and-nine report is a by-product of hadith absolutism and the later sanctification of Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, not the view of the earliest Muslims.
“this view of popularizing these two books was a byproduct to that phenomenon of Hadith absolutism”
Mufti Abu Layth says that if even a hundred of al-Bukhari's narrations were found unreliable it would be no big deal compared with the eight thousand he has.
“Imam Buhari has approximately over 8,000 narrations in his book if let's say 100 of them even have issues with them and are unreliable and eventually declared to be unacceptable that's no big deal”
Mufti Abu Layth says that criticising reports in Sahih al-Bukhari cannot make a person a deviant when al-Albani rejected around a dozen of them, and that the salaf understood the Quran's miracles in several ways, miracles always having causes within God's law of nature.
“criticized several hadith in Bukhari probably just close to a dozen or so and clasp them as weak and rejected them”
Mufti Abu Layth holds that a report being in Sahih al-Bukhari does not settle the matter when Bukhari's own narrations of it conflict and rest on one companion's assumption, and that Muslims are not bound by earlier scholars' understanding, shaped by their age, when the Prophet's honour is at stake.
“we are not held to account by the understanding of people before us they were amazing legends they were great geniuses but their own culture their own age influence their perception”
Mufti Abu Layth says Sahih al-Bukhari should not be called the most authentic book after the Quran: it is an excellent effort whose reports are still sifted, while fiqh and the madhhabs preserved the Sunnah in living form.
“let's stop saying these things of Buhari is the most sound book after the Quran well lucky I do not like these kind of statements upset me”
Mufti Abu Layth says that warning people that doubting one hadith leads to doubting the Quran is scare-mongering, since Bukhari and Muslim are not the word of God and the deen does not fall apart from questioning; he says that in his view Jesus is not going to come, while asking that the matter be treated as a difference of opinion rather than a sectarian one.
“by removing cobwebs the Deen is not gonna fall apart and I can guarantee you this Deen is not gonna fall apart”
Mufti Abu Layth holds that the report of Aisha's age at marriage is untrue and presents the Prophet disrespectfully, since Arab culture of the time did not marry girls as young as six or seven, and that loyalty to the Prophet should outrank loyalty to al-Bukhari.
“you putting present in the Prophet sallallaahu I leave salam in such a disrespectful light and it is not true that people generally didn't in in the arab culture married girls that young they didn't”
Mufti Abu Layth says all the chains of the report have some problem, so it is not unquestionably sound.
“all of these people have some problems the reason I'm highlighting this is to show that look when these narrations already have AE they have problems in the chain they have these are not unquestionably sound”
Mufti Abu Layth holds that Sahih al-Bukhari cannot be proven beyond reasonable doubt to go back to Imam al-Bukhari, since the Sultaniyya edition rests on the lost Yuniniyya, the recensions disagree, and the book's transmission depends on Farabri, whom no contemporary vouched for.
“the copies that go throughout the world all disagree with themselves hadith missing hadith les patched together we've got cut and paste job going on”
Mufti Abu Layth says the Sahih al-Bukhari report of Abu Hurayra being taught Ayat al-Kursi by a thieving devil is fabricated or mis-transmitted, contradicts the Quran and Sunnah and disrespects Islam.
“fabricated or Mis transmitted hadith in salvo hari which is this one about a bull rider of the law unquote the devil and the devil taught him something ridiculous totally ridiculous I mean it completely contradicts the Quran and Sunnah”
Mufti Abu Layth holds that the report is blasphemous and a mockery of the deen, since it shows Abu Hurayra clumsy and disobedient, the Prophet failing to teach and tolerating theft from the treasury, and the devil teaching Islam, against Imam Malik's principle that everything of the deen was taught by the Prophet.
“what how blasphemous disrespectful is this hadith it shows Abu Huraira to be incredibly”
Mufti Abu Layth says that questioning Sahih al-Bukhari does not diminish the religion and that scholars should discuss its problems transparently rather than ask for the discussion to be kept private.
“i feel that we need transparency we need to be honest because we are in an age of information it's you know covering up things isn't going to cut it anymore”
Mufti Abu Layth says Sahih al-Bukhari has been given a de facto status on par with or above the Quran, which he rejects entirely: it is a book like the other hadith collections and the Quran always takes precedence over it.
“i will never ever accept that status that is more powerful than the quran or even on par with the quran or even just slightly below the quran that is nonsense”
Mufti Abu Layth says the transmission of Sahih al-Bukhari cannot be established back to its author beyond reasonable doubt, because it rests on one unvouched transmitter whose students admit the copy was incomplete and altered, and whose copies disagree with one another.
“can we establish bukhari back to the imam with with confidence beyond reasonable doubt and the answer is we can't beyond reasonable doubt there is way too much conflict”
Mufti Abu Layth says these Bukhari reports contain a factual error, dating the night journey before prophethood, and portray the Prophet and Moses in a disrespectful and irrational light; he adds that he holds the night journey to have been a vision.
“then the prophet tries to touch her and she moves and she says to him i seek refuge in allah from you from who from the prophet nonsense utter nonsense disrespecting our prophet”
Mufti Abu Layth says the Bukhari report of Solomon vowing to sleep with ninety women and being punished with a disabled child for not saying 'if Allah wills' is disgusting and disrespectful to a prophet of God.
“this is a prophet of god who can't be bothered to say i mean just look at that hadith that is disgusting this is so disrespectful to our prophets”
Mufti Abu Layth says the closing words of hadith 5492 are a syntactical error that the early scholars rightly crossed out, and that later commentators should admit the sentence is absurd instead of justifying it.
“the classical scholars like lacabisi and these great early maliki legends who were the early founders that had the manuscripts the kind of tertiary manuscripts they cross this out as a mistake because it makes no sense”
Mufti Abu Layth says the report that the Prophet married Aisha at six and consummated at nine is an attack on the Prophet's honour, because a six-year-old cannot give the consent that Bukhari itself requires of a virgin, and the claim of physical maturity at nine contradicts the command to separate children's beds only at ten.
“the prophet is looking at a six-year-old child with the intent of marriage which is a sexual relationship that is disgusting and it is an attack on the honor of our prophet”
Mufti Abu Layth says the Bukhari report of monkeys stoning an adulterer makes no sense, since adultery belongs to the human institution of marriage, which does not exist among animals.
“adultery is to do with the institution of marriage institutions don't exist in the monkey world or in the animal world okay”
Mufti Abu Layth says Imam Bukhari set a gold standard for authenticity but did not always apply it himself, since he transmitted by meaning, concealed the names of problematic teachers and narrated from a Khariji, so the narrators of his book are not all beyond question.
“my problem per se is not with imam buhari imam buhari even though he didn't stick by his rules and to be fair he also bent the rules just like people before him”
Mufti Abu Layth says Bukhari's persecution by the Hanafis and the Hanbali literalists in his last years is why his book reaches us through a single transmitter, and that the same two groups now insist it reaches us with certainty.
“the book doesn't reach us with certainty because of the suffering inflicted on him by the hanafi's and the humblings”
Mufti Abu Layth says that although Bukhari had other students who transmitted the Sahih, their versions were incomplete or did not reach later generations, so the book in fact reaches us through Farabri alone.
“there's been a lot of claims that we have sahil bukhari through all of these sources now that's a lie”
Mufti Abu Layth says the only transmission of Sahih al-Bukhari that reached later generations through teaching is Farabri's, and that copies found without teaching cannot be used to claim an independent connected transmission.
“so all these people online trying to say we've got transmissions that are connected look this is the problem they're not being honest”
Mufti Abu Layth says no contemporary who knew Farabri ever declared him reliable, that the later attributions to al-Baji and al-Sam'ani are unsupported in their own works, and that a scholar transmitting from someone does not make that person reliable.
“nobody who actually knows him ever vouched for him as reliable”
Mufti Abu Layth says Farabri's own copy was incomplete and rearranged by his students, their copies differ in chains and hadith, and every later manuscript down to the Sultaniyya edition is a patchwork that still needed correction.
“these are all through fabri and they all disagree and it's not just little disagreements the actual names in the chains are missing as well”
Mufti Abu Layth says Sahih al-Bukhari should be treated like any other hadith collection, with each report judged on its own merits by whether it contradicts reason, the Quran or an established principle, because the religion already reaches Muslims through the living tradition of practice.
“the quality of what we're getting from sahil bukhari is in my understanding just like any other hadith”
Mufti Abu Layth says the problems with Sahih al-Bukhari should be discussed openly rather than hidden from ordinary Muslims, because concealing them is what causes people to lose their faith.
“if we were just honest from the beginning people wouldn't lose their faith”
Mufti Abu Layth holds that Sahih al-Bukhari cannot reliably be traced to al-Bukhari because it reaches us through al-Farabri alone, whom nobody vouched for in his lifetime, that the deen is conveyed by the living tradition which Imam Malik distinguished from hadith, and that he accepts hadith only by the muhaddithin's own standards: a report must not contradict reason, the Quran and transmitted sources, or an Islamic principle.
“nobody that knew thoroughly in his lifetime ever vouched for him as a reliable person in hadith so we are taking all of this from one guy who nobody vouched for”
Mufti Abu Layth says the Bukhari report in which Umar speaks of a verse of stoning that was revealed and recited is disrespectful to Umar and to the Quran, since there is no verse of stoning in the Quran and the report amounts to saying the Quran has changed, and he highlights another Bukhari report in which the Prophet forgets a verse.
“so this is disrespectful to - Omar is disrespectful to the Quran is trying to say that what is saying the Quran has changed”
Mufti Abu Layth says the Bukhari report that the Prophet fell unconscious after removing his izar to carry stones for the Kaaba and was never seen naked again is nonsense that disrespects the Prophet, and that the scholars' efforts to soften it contradict its own wording.
“this is how we are repaying the our profits with respect that is nonsense”
Mufti Abu Layth says the Bukhari report in which the Prophet turns away from a woman beside Umar's palace in paradise because of Umar's jealousy casts the Prophet in a poor light.
“look what light its casting upon our beloved prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam”
Mufti Abu Layth says the Bukhari deathbed report in which the companions dispute before the Prophet and ask whether he is speaking deliriously portrays the companions badly and is not true, and that Sunnis allow the Shia to use it against the companions by accepting it.
“I mean look at the nonsense attributing that this this is not true”
Mufti Abu Layth says the Bukhari report of Sulayman and the hundred women is absurd, puts a prophet in a bad light and portrays God as punishing a prophet with a disabled child, and that any report which clashes with reason, the Quran and the general understanding of Islam, or uproots an Islamic principle, is to be rejected.
“if a hadith fits in with with the conditions with reason if it fits in with it doesn't clash with the Quran and the general understanding of Islam and it doesn't approve Islamic principles we will accept it”
Mufti Abu Layth says the Bukhari report of the talking wolf and cow is absurd, since animals do not grasp concepts such as purpose and future events, that its chain is poor, and that the phrase radi Allahu anhuma attributed to the Prophet is an anachronism from a later age.
“these words came much after like weave like muslims we use these words when we're gonna speak about the Companions”
Mufti Abu Layth says the Bukhari report in which the Prophet points to Aisha's house as the place where the fitna and the horn of Shaytan will rise is disrespectful to the Prophet and to Aisha, and that Muslims need to question what they present as authentic.
“what the hell is wrong with these people well this is so disrespectful to our prophet”
Mufti Abu Layth holds that BukhariGate matters because the whole of Sahih al-Bukhari rests on al-Farabri alone and because its reports repay the Prophet, Umar and Aisha with disrespect, and he attributes the circulation of these reports to Wahhabis and their sympathisers, whom he calls haters of the Prophet.
“this is why Buhari gate was so important and we have to remember this whole book transmitted on the back of one man robbery robbery”
Mufti Abu Layth holds that the chain of the poisoning report is unacceptable because Yunus was faulted by early critics for his memory and al-Zuhri does not state that he heard it.
“I will show the contradiction and then also show from the chain perspective why it is unacceptable.”
Mufti Abu Layth says the debate over al-Bukhari does not apply to Imam Malik's book because Imam Malik himself teaches in it that a hadith with a good chain may not be acted upon.
“the reason this debate does not apply to the motto of imam malik is because imam malik himself in the mother is teaching you to reject hadith”
Mufti Abu Layth says he would not single out a particular hadith book, taking each hadith on its merits, but if anything he supposes he would call the Muwatta of Imam Malik the most authentic.
“I would not advocate a particular book uh I would say if anything the the most classic book we have of hadith is the m of IM Malik”
Mufti Abu Layth says that most scholars of Islam in the past who were invested in a particular field were institutionalised by it and did not critique it the way an outsider does, though a few thought out of the box.
“Those who were invested in a particular field were institutionalized by that field. They don't critique it the same way as somebody that's looking at it from outside of the box does.”
Mufti Abu Layth says the discussion did not put BukhariGate to rest but further cemented it, and that because Sahih al-Bukhari cannot be shown with certainty to reach us exactly from its author, reports in it that contradict reason, the Quran or Islam's principles should be set aside.
“if we can't establish with utter certainty which we can't that this book reaches us exactly from let's say source a which is allegedly imam bukhari himself”
Mufti Abu Layth says that defending reports in Bukhari which portray the Prophet as bewitched or forgetting the Quran amounts to claiming the Prophet could err but al-Bukhari could not, when errors in the book's transmission are far more likely.
“the prophet could forget the quran the prophet could be clumsy the prophet could forget surahs and verses the prophet could do all of these things but bukhari could never have made a mistake”
Mufti Abu Layth says he has never been against Imam Bukhari, whom he regards as an outstanding though fallible hadith scholar, but holds that the book reaching us was altered in transmission, so reports in it that disrespect the prophets or concern killing should be treated with caution.
“he wasn't a prophet and he wasn't infallible and you have to remember the book that comes to us from him 100 of it is probably not from him but maybe 90 of it was his”
Mufti Abu Layth says that later transmitters and editors, even with good intentions, may have altered reports and names to match versions they knew, so that the same hadith appearing in other books need not be independent of al-Bukhari.
“my question to that is how do you know this is not a bounce effect or a ripple and boomerang effect that basically because imam buhari was a uh you know he was a great person”
Mufti Abu Layth says the hadith tradition is a beautiful and unparalleled record of the Prophet that should be filtered for the reports that became corrupted, not thrown away.
“some infection crept in and it's our job to to to clean it but that's it i i don't say that you need to throw hadith away”
Mufti Abu Layth says it is prejudice and a double standard that al-Bukhari accepts as trustworthy a narrator who openly praised Ibn Muljam for killing Ali, while reports from Imam Jafar and the other Shia imams are rejected because they come from Shia sources.
“so why do we accept the the one who's praising the person who murdered the ali like this is just this is just ridiculous like we are just so drowned in prejudice and bias”
Mufti Abu Layth says the Ash'aris believe the Quran was created but, embarrassed by it, hide the wording behind terms the public would not understand.
“ashadis believe that now but i've mentioned this before you see what they do is they're embarrassed of it so they hide the wording and replace it with words that the common public wouldn't understand”
Mufti Abu Layth says the first Bukhari chain for Jesus's descent is unreliable because al-Bukhari left the names of Ishaq and Salih ambiguous, which he says al-Bukhari did on purpose with teachers' names so as to deceive readers, as al-Dhahabi and Ibn Hajar record, and because al-Zuhri was known to insert his own words into reports and to make mursal reports reach the Prophet.
“buhari actually is known on several occasions to do to to kind of make names ambiguous so as to deceive his readers”
Mufti Abu Layth says Muslims should apply to their own tradition the critical standards they apply to other faiths, noting that Sahih al-Bukhari rests on one transmitter whom no one vouched for for about 150 years.
“but then when it comes to islam we completely just put blinkers on our eyes”
Mufti Abu Layth holds that Mariya al-Qibtiyya was a wife of the Prophet and not a concubine, and calls nonsense the teachings, some of them in Sahih al-Bukhari, that the Prophet married a child, forcibly took Safiyya, tried to force himself on a woman, forgot the Quran or was made impotent by magic.
“she was the only wife of the prophet alaihi wasallam that brought him a child that lived in this world after prophethood”
Mufti Abu Layth says Ibn Hajar was wrong to argue that the many weak chains give the satanic verses story a basis, a mistake he attributes to passion for the hadith project rather than to malice.
“this is ibn hajjar's clear blind mistake that he it's and i'm not saying he he i'm not saying he did this out of malice he didn't”
Mufti Abu Layth says that when a report disparages the Prophet, loyalty belongs to the Prophet rather than to any scholar who accepted it, and that everyone's words may be accepted or rejected except the Prophet's.
“if you find an incident that is doing that your loyalty is first and foremost with the prophet salallahu not with this great mahadev great person”
