Mufti Abu Layth presents his first example from Sahih al-Bukhari, hadith 2655 in the book of testimonies, in which the Prophet hears a man reciting in the mosque and says may Allah have mercy on him, he has reminded me of such-and-such a verse that I had forgotten and dropped from such-and-such a surah. He stresses that the report has the Prophet forgetting the Quran. In the same vein he turns to hadith 6830 in the book of rebels, a long report about stoning. As a side point he notes a grammatical slip in its wording, which the footnotes themselves correct, and says it is a small matter. In the report Umar gives a speech saying that Allah sent Muhammad with the truth and revealed the book to him, and that among what was revealed was the verse of stoning, which they used to read, understand and comprehend, so that the Prophet stoned and they stoned after him; in another report Umar says that but for what people would say he would have written it into the Quran. Mufti says there is no verse of stoning in the Quran, that attributing this to Umar is disrespectful to Umar, and that it is disrespectful to the Quran because it is trying to say that the Quran has changed.
