What this part covers

machinesummary, machine-written

The Bukhari report in which a wolf and a cow speak eloquent Arabic about purpose and the future is absurd, Mufti Abu Layth says, and the phrase radi Allahu anhuma placed in the Prophet's mouth is an anachronism from a later age.

In more detail

Mufti Abu Layth first notes as a side point that Abu al-Yaman, who is senior to al-Bukhari, is said to have heard only one hadith directly from Shu'ayb and to have transmitted the rest from a book. In the report, Abu Hurayra relates that the Prophet said a wolf took a shepherd's sheep, and when the shepherd tried to retrieve it the wolf spoke eloquent Arabic, asking who would guard the sheep on the day of the wild beasts when it alone was shepherd; the report then jumps to a man riding a cow, which turned to him and said it was not created for riding but for ploughing, upon which the people said subhanAllah and the Prophet said that he, Abu Bakr and Umar believed in it. Mufti points out that the words radi Allahu anhuma, which the Prophet is made to use of Abu Bakr and Umar, came into use long afterwards, and although a narrator might have inserted them, the whole story has a wolf and a cow speaking Arabic and grasping concepts such as purpose and future events that animals do not have. He calls the description absurd and the chain poor.

Position stated

correctedChecked by two independent reviews, not by the channel

Mufti Abu Layth says the Bukhari report of the talking wolf and cow is absurd, since animals do not grasp concepts such as purpose and future events, that its chain is poor, and that the phrase radi Allahu anhuma attributed to the Prophet is an anachronism from a later age.

In his words

“these words came much after like weave like muslims we use these words when we're gonna speak about the Companions”
