What this part covers
machinesummary, machine-writtenThe Bukhari deathbed report in which the companions dispute and ask whether the Prophet is speaking deliriously portrays the companions badly and is not true, Mufti Abu Layth says, and Sunnis hand the Shia a weapon by accepting it.
In more detail
Mufti Abu Layth reads hadith 4431, the report of the Prophet's final days: on a Thursday, in great pain, the Prophet asks for something to write on so that he can write a document after which they would never go astray, and those present begin to argue and dispute among themselves, which Mufti says is unbefitting in the presence of a prophet, and ask what is the matter with him, whether he is speaking deliriously, a word Mufti explains as talking nonsense. He says this is how the report portrays the companions of the Prophet, calls it untrue, and observes that the Shia always use this report to attack the companions, which Sunnis allow by accepting it, doing themselves no justice. He then introduces a report he has mentioned before, from the book of jihad, hadith 2819, in which Sulayman the son of Dawud says that tonight he will go to a hundred, or in one version ninety-nine, women, each of whom will bear a warrior son, and does not say insha'Allah when his companion tells him to.
Position stated
Mufti Abu Layth says the Bukhari deathbed report in which the companions dispute before the Prophet and ask whether he is speaking deliriously portrays the companions badly and is not true, and that Sunnis allow the Shia to use it against the companions by accepting it.
