What this part covers

machinesummary, machine-written

Nothing proven categorically makes music haram, and lyrics by themselves do not make listening haram. The hadith the critic cited on singing and hypocrisy is weak in every chain, and he lists scholars who said no sahih report forbids music.

In more detail

Mufti Abu Layth turns to the critic's point on music, recalling his own clip in which he said nothing categorically proves music haram and that lyrics, even sexual or violent ones, do not make it haram, although a person may choose not to listen. He quotes the critic's reply that the Prophet declared music haram and that singing grows hypocrisy in the heart as water grows vegetation. He recites the report in Arabic and says it is transmitted from Ibn Mas'ud [?] through five chains, three of which stop at Ibn Mas'ud, in collections such as Ibn Abi al-Dunya, al-Daylami, al-Bayhaqi, Abu Dawud and al-Hakim, and that every chain is criticised as weak, so a Salafi should bring a sahih report. He reads al-Shawkani in Nayl al-Awtar, who after collecting the hadith on music says many great scholars declared them all weak, and quotes Ibn Hazm, Abu Bakr ibn al-Arabi in Ahkam al-Quran, Ibn Tahir [?] and al-Fakihani [?] that no sahih hadith or clear text forbids music, adding that only Allah and His Messenger are authorities in religion. He then lists, as quoted from these sources, people said to have listened to or permitted music: a Companion [?], Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz before he became caliph, Tawus [?], Sa'd ibn Ibrahim [?] the qadi of Madinah, the Maliki school as transmitted by Shafi'i authors [?], Abu Talib al-Makki in Qut al-Qulub, and the people of Madinah, of whom it is said there was no dispute about flutes and instruments. He closes by saying the critic should at least bring a sahih hadith, and that the one he brought is incredibly weak.

Nothing proven categorically demonstrates that music is haram, lyrics by themselves do not make listening haram, and the hadith brought to forbid it, that singing breeds hypocrisy in the heart, is weak in every chain.

In his words

“there's nothing proven to categorically to demonstrate music is Haram and I think that's what I say enough and yes I add that lyrics do not make something Haram”
