What this part covers
machinesummary, machine-writtenMufti Abu Layth argues it is not: critics report that Hammad ibn Salama's memory failed late in life, that Bukhari did not transmit from him, and that Thabit was not the most reliable transmitter from Anas, Qatada and Humayd al-Tawil being ranked above him.
In more detail
Mufti Abu Layth takes the first chain the critics said he left out, which they called the most authentic from Anas: Hammad ibn Salama from Thabit from Anas, Thabit being, in their words, the most reliable transmitter from Anas. He notes they did not quote the full chain but lets that pass. He says critics record that Hammad ibn Salama's memory deteriorated at the end of his life, and that Ali ibn al-Madini transmits from Yahya ibn Sa'id that Hammad taught before and after his memory failed and people could not distinguish the two, which he calls the first problem. On Thabit, he says Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani would not take his hadith, as Ibn Adi transmits; that Abu Dawud [?], asked who was most reliable from Anas, named Qatada, not Thabit; that Abu Hatim al-Razi ranked al-Zuhri, then Qatada, then Thabit; and that al-Khatib al-Baghdadi [?] records Ibn al-Madini or Imam Ahmad [?] being asked whether Thabit or Humayd al-Tawil was firmer from Anas, with Yahya ibn Sa'id saying Thabit's memory was confused and Humayd was firmer. He adds that Imam Muslim accepted Hammad only as supporting evidence and that Bukhari did not transmit from him at all. He concludes that this chain is problematic and not the unanimously agreed-upon chain the critics claimed.
