What this part covers

machinesummary, machine-written

The main chains of 'whoever changes his religion, kill him' run through Ikrima, whom he describes as a Khariji, and whom Imam Malik and many early authorities rejected or called a liar.

In more detail

Mufti Abu Layth says nearly every chain of the narration runs through Ikrima: Bukhari's, four of al-Nasa'i's six, Abu Dawud's, al-Tirmidhi's, Ibn Majah's and four of Ahmad's five. He describes Ikrima as one of the Khawarij, the early sect that held it permissible to kill those who commit major sins and whom he calls the forefathers of ISIS, and says that, like the Khawarij who hated Ali and Mu'awiya, he narrates that Ali went against the Prophet's command, which supports an extremist ideology of the sword. He lists criticisms of Ikrima: that Imam Malik rejected him and transmitted very little from him, that Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, al-Qasim ibn Muhammad, Mujahid, Ibn Sirin [?] and others called him a liar, that al-Dhahabi described him as holding that people could be put to the sword, that Ahmad ibn Hanbal recalled only one hadith Malik transmitted from him, and that al-Rabi' ibn Sulayman reports from al-Shafi'i that Malik did not consider it permissible to accept his hadith. He adds reports that Mus'ab al-Zubayri [?] said Ikrima lied about Ibn Abbas and claimed he held Khariji views, that Ali ibn Abdullah ibn Abbas tied Ikrima up for lying about his father, and that a servant was told not to lie as Ikrima lied about Ibn Abbas, and notes that one of Ahmad's narrations through Ikrima has Ali burning books, which he says disparages Ali.
