What this part covers
machinesummary, machine-writtenWhat people called magic fell into three kinds: mind control and hypnosis, chemical potions, and stage illusion, all of which have natural explanations.
In more detail
Mufti Abu Layth says commentators such as Fakhr al-Din al-Razi listed about eight categories of magic, which Ibn Ashur summarised into three, as did a leading Maliki scholar he names as Mustafa Bin Hamza [?]. The first is a kind of mind control, including hypnosis. The second is potions and naturally found chemicals, for which he gives the examples of lithium as a mood stabiliser and of aphrodisiac or oxytocin-inducing plants, recalling love-spell advertisements in Karachi, and says we now have explanations of how they work. The third is illusion and trickery as performed by stage illusionists such as Derren Brown, who admit it is a trick.

Position stated
Mufti Abu Layth says that today we have explanations of how the potions once seen as magic actually work.
“remember they may believe that it's blessing but today we've actually got explanations of how they work”

generally to mean something that is inexplicable like if they couldn't understand something they call itself so the Arabs would call a if if there was a land that ought to be producing ought to be fertile but it was barren like it wouldn't produce any produce but it was perceptibly okay they would call that Artemis hora a magic turnip on land because they couldn't explain it as a goat or something that wouldn't give milk although it looks like it should they would call it an sermons for Mustafar are like a goat that and just
to give you that concept okay now so the Oh Lamar they expand on magic being of different categories what could we just to provide a bit more of a backdrop here we know that in the medieval times and and as this is developed as this thing of Merit magic I've explained illusions that's and I've said that the olam I accept that that is the main understanding in the Quran but what else could have magic fallen under surely everybody wasn't just doing illusions you know when when they say oh he did a magic trick on him and he made him split up with his wife and he caused
destruction on this house and he made this person die and this wasn't just all an illusion so what was this so many of them of a serene like Farah Dean arrazi they categorize all these categories into like eight or so categories and even assured further summarizes them into three and this is the same thing reiterated by chef Mustapha bin Hamza as well a very famous leading Maliki scholar of the world now the these three are that people when they did magic they this is what they were doing the first one what they called it the ethereal
Neve Sony or Touhey me that it was they were causing some kind of mind-control like you heard examples from the chef a moment ago about things going on in India things doing things causing a kind of mind-control that's people are really good at having this what falls under this as well as hypnosis having the ability to create hypnotic trances so people they buy into what you're doing and you see this on TV shows and things like these people are doing hypnotic kind of trances on people
and stuff like this the second category is what called like a kaffir in Arabic which is like potions or chemicals people use these so sometimes you can find today we've got chemicals but historically naturally found chemicals which these people would have used so for example you could find naturally found a minerals and things like lithium now lithium is a mood stabilizer right now somebody could be like let's say somebody some woman comes and says oh my
husband you know he's always in a bad mood and he's doing this so he says look here's this water I've blessed it and I've done this and he's got some minerals through trial-and-error like let's say lithium and things like this now the husband is taking that and is actually working because it is a mood stabilizer so it would stabilize your mood it doesn't make a difference so the person is like wow this is magic in a similar way things like aphrodisiacs things like this were used Oh so-and-so doesn't love me my husband doesn't love me here try these kind of try this try that right
and aphrodisiacs create all oxytocin inducing drugs so oxytocin in the brain is the neurotransmitter linked with the whole lovey-dovey feeling so when people are in love the brain releases an huge amount of oxytocin or a certain amount and you and you create this kind of bond and everybody's just so happy and they just you know the whole world should be about peace and forget about war and it's all that that's oxytocin in the brain so if you just flood that out there in the world we'd have a lot of peace so the thing is now if somebody gets something today you could use chemicals that induce oxytocin
but in the past certain plants and things that they found that induce oxytocin as an example would make you very lovey-dovey so if somebody was using that on a partner that person would naturally be very oh the magic is working so you get all of this and you heard earlier on this you know sometimes safely jadoo or Bengali Jo and we used to see all these adverts in Pakistan in Karachi and stuff like this you know maboob avocado pear and you know this and I just come in and here every love will be at your feet and so these kind of potions was another technique that
people would use remember they may believe that it's blessing but today we've actually got explanations of how they work and the third one category is what they call shot weather which is like illusions and trickery and like magic tricks that you see on stage and illusionist Derren Brown and people like this doing all these kind of tricks that look Wow and amazing except you know today these people will tell you they may not tell you how they did the trick but they'll tell you this is a trick yeah this isn't like like you heard the sheriff say they turn paper into money and do all of this and turn something into an iPhone and but it doesn't really work like that that's and that's common
sense okay just - so this is what magic in essence was and how it was now the claim for any fantasy magic is absolutely absurd now when we take a look at the Quran there is a verse and I'll come back to that and the sheriff already spoke about that one the heart and marut kind of verse but looking at the other verses that are all speaking about the about magic they're usually to do with moosa aleihsalaam because magic was such a big deal in his time such a big deal it was the thing of the age the magic and and
