What this part covers

machinesummary, machine-written

At the end of the iddah the couple must either reconcile or part with kindness before witnesses, and Mufti Abu Layth reads the promise that God makes a way out and provides from unexpected places as reassurance to the vulnerable party that she need not accept oppression for shelter. The objector, he says, skips all of this.

In more detail

Mufti Abu Layth reads on: when the term is reached the couple either reconcile with kindness or separate with kindness, and witnesses are to be called so that others know whether they are together or apart, as God's admonition to those who believe in him. He gives the wisdom of keeping the divorced wife in the house as a cooling-off period: a divorce pronounced in a rage can be reconsidered when both live their separate lives under one roof for weeks and begin to miss each other, and the verse then insists that a decision be made rather than left to drag on. He turns to the words that whoever is mindful of God will find a way made out for him and will be provided for from where he cannot imagine, and reads them as addressed to the vulnerable party at the end of a marriage: in patriarchal societies, then and now, a woman might fear she must grovel or accept oppression for food and shelter, and the verse tells her that God will provide if she sets out, that whoever relies on God finds him sufficient, and that God accomplishes what he sets out and has given everything its measure. He says the objector ignores all these verses and starts from the next one.

Mufti Abu Layth holds that the promise in 65:2-3 that God makes a way out and provides from unexpected places is addressed to the vulnerable party in a divorce, who need not accept oppression for the sake of shelter and food.

In his words

“so if a relationship is is ending it could be daunting people could think well what's gonna happen now should i grovel should I beg should I put up with oppression just so I can get food”
