The answer in brief
machinesummary, machine-writtenMufti Abu Layth calls Abdur Rahman Mangera very talented and respectful, but says his thinking is ultimately closed Deobandi thinking.
In more detail
A chat question asks Mufti Abu Layth for his thoughts on Abdur Rahman ibn Yusuf Mangera. Mufti says he has no negative views of him, calls him very talented and intelligent, one of the leading talents of the Hanafi Deobandi scholarly world, and says he is not like the 'nut cases' some of that circle produce. Mufti says his thinking is ultimately closed Deobandi thinking, loyal to his school, and that he would not teach outside that dogma, adding that if one is not part of the solution one is still part of the problem. He recalls sharing a conference with him in the Netherlands, where he was respectful but asked not to appear in photos on social media, and says that years ago in Damascus, while still Hanafi, he studied with him.

What is going on? Let me bring up your Thank you for doing these streams, Harun. Much love to you, Shukran. Right. So MUI right what is your what are your thoughts?
What is your thoughts on MUI Abdul Rahman Ysef Manger? Right. Um Mangera Sahib. Yeah. You see Mui Mangera. Yeah. Yeah, I mean I don't have negative kind of views on him or anything, but he is from the the kind of you know that Hanfi Theoi kind of crowd that you're going to get.
He is very talented. He's very intelligent. He is very um you know from that kind of he's probably one of the leading um talents really in if you want to call it academia uh teachings and expeditions that's really other I don't who else I mean you're going to have people like Riyadhak you're going to have uh but he's from that same school as in that same kind of uh league as them and he's seen as very kind of ilme academic does his research
but it is ultimately very closed theobi uh kind of thinking it's not something you know they would never think out of the box they wouldn't really be down with other people going out of the box I mean my impression of him is he's not as um you like he gets some of these other nut cases and stuff like that.
He's not like that. But he is very loyal to his school of Diab. Okay. So he there is that dogma clearly and he wouldn't really ever teach outside of that dogma. But he's not like some of these people who, you know, they don't even know very much or they don't.
Um, so that's my kind of thoughts. It's a shame really because I feel that you know in many ways if you're not part of the solution, you're still part of the problem. Um, I have actually in the past I um I did a uh a course I delivered a kind of a conf participate in a conference alongside him.
It was um in the Netherlands. So Netherlands of B Netherlands. Yeah. So and it it was good. And to be fair, he was very respectful and um yeah, but he was I remember he was at one point uh somebody cuz somebody took a photo of us and he came and he said uh he was like, "Are you going to put those photos up on social media?
Please, can you not put any photos with me in there?" And [laughter] I was like, "Yeah, okay." But you do know this is a recorded event that's going to be on social media. You do know that. So yeah. Yeah. That's the that said many years ago in uh Damascus before I became Maliki I was Hannfi and I one of the people I did actually study with was him.
So you know and I'm grateful for that. I'm grateful he he obviously can't remember it. I spoke to him about it and he was like, uh, I don't remember at all. You know, that's fascinating when you think about it. Yeah, [snorts] I was very early in my journey. So, very early. I had um just turned 18. I you know, flown off to Damascus, new country.
