What this part covers
machinesummary, machine-writtenMufti Abu Layth says that although one transmitted opinion of Ibn Ma'in accepts him, Ibn Ma'in is also transmitted as counting the household of Abu Uways among the weak. He adds that Abu al-Zubayr was weakened by several critics, so none of the chains the critics brought is conclusive.
In more detail
Completing the second Jabir chain, Mufti Abu Layth says Shu'ba reported that Abu al-Zubayr used to make things up about people he disliked, that Ibn Ma'in and Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani considered him weak, and that Abu Zur'a, al-Shafi'i, Abu Hatim and al-Bukhari said he is not to be relied on as evidence [?]; he asks where the conclusive chains the critics claimed are. He then answers their attack on his criticism of a chain in Sahih al-Bukhari through Isma'il ibn Abi Uways from his brother Abd al-Hamid ibn Abi Uways [?], where he had said Ibn Ma'in considered him weak: the critics said Ibn Ma'in in fact held him reliable. He replies that the critics only cite one transmitted opinion of Ibn Ma'in, while in the commentary on al-Tirmidhi's 'Ilal, which he attributes to Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali [?], Ibn Ma'in is transmitted as saying that the household of Abu Uways and his son, and Ali ibn Asim [?] and his son, are among the worst of people and all weak. He mocks the critics' Arabic over the plural of 'weak', and calls their refutation pathetic for bringing unsound reports and then having the audacity to mock him, before turning to how low, in his words, they then fell.
