What this part covers
machinesummary, machine-writtenEncouraged by al-Sha'bi to join the circles of knowledge, the merchant Abu Hanifa studied with Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman, succeeded him as the central figure of Kufa and became the voice of the school of reason.
In more detail
Mufti Abu Layth relates that as a grown man thriving in business, Abu Hanifa walked past the great imam al-Sha'bi in Iraq, who asked which circles of knowledge he attended; when he replied that he went to the markets and traded, al-Sha'bi told him to make it his business to attend those circles, for he saw in him a brilliance and an extraordinary future. He says the words struck him, and this began a life-changing metamorphosis into the legendary imam, linking it to a quote shown earlier that blessed are the curious, for they will have adventures. He says Abu Hanifa brought a mind on fire, studied fiqh and tafsir among other subjects, and above all took the tutelage of Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman [?], a link in a chain of early Iraqi scholars. After Hammad's death he became the central figure in Kufa, alongside others such as Sufyan al-Thawri and Ibn Abi Layla, loved Hammad so much that he named his son Hammad, and concretised the school of reason, of which Mufti calls him a legendary voice.
