Mufti Abu Layth outlines the story of Musa and the servant of Allah from Surah al-Kahf 18:60 onwards and its fuller telling in al-Bukhari's hadith 4725.

In more detail

Mufti Abu Layth opens Surah al-Kahf at verse 60, where the story of Musa and his young companion, named in the hadith as Joshua (Yusha), begins. Mufti summarises the story: the fish slips into the sea where the two seas meet, they find a servant of Allah given special knowledge, who damages a ship, kills a boy and repairs a wall while Musa objects each time, and who finally explains that he acted on God's instruction. He says the fuller account is in Sahih al-Bukhari [?], hadith 4725 in the book of tafsir, which begins with Ibn Abbas being told that a storyteller claimed this was a different Musa, and Ibn Abbas saying he was lying. He relates from the hadith that Musa, asked who was the most knowledgeable of people, said he was, was told of a servant more knowledgeable than him where the two seas meet, and set off carrying a fish.
