What this part covers
machinesummary, machine-writtenNo: he condemns the attack on Salman Rushdie as cowardly and contrary to Islam, saying ideas must be answered with speech and that the attack only demonised Islam and revived Rushdie's fame.
In more detail
Mufti Abu Layth says he will discuss The Satanic Verses because of the attack on Salman Rushdie a few days earlier at an event in New York, and condemns it in categorical terms as cowardly and an abomination: Islam does not teach anyone to do this, harming Rushdie or anyone who speaks against Islam does Islam no favours, and ideas must be tackled with speech. He says Rushdie had long been forgotten, that the book was published in 1988 when Mufti was in primary school, and that most younger Muslims would not know his name, so the attack only demonises Islam and returns Rushdie, now about 75, to the limelight, with nominations for awards he never received before. He says it is very clear to him that the attacker must be suffering from mental illness, and argues that attackers of every background, including racists who shoot up schools and cinemas in the United States, are generally treated as mental health cases and that Muslim attackers should not be treated differently.

i want to discuss the satanic verses reason being is that there was an attack on salman rushdie several days ago and in new york during a um during a conference that he was speaking at i want to first of all very clearly in categorical terms condemn this attack for the cowardice and the abomination that it is okay
islam does not teach anybody to do things like this let's just be very clear this brings nothing but it just brings absolute negativity to islam nobody is doing islam any favors by harming salman rushdie or harming someone that speaks against islam okay you have to tackle ideas and you have to speak and sure you can condemn you can speak or you want to about him
and let's be let's be real salman rushdie was out of flavor he was long forgotten his book is incredibly old it was published in the late 80s i was in primary school when the satanic verses was published 1988 i believe and it's so out of flavor it's so irrelevant now not the topic can be still discussed but has him salman i would have doubted that most younger people have even heard of him
so that is from the muslim perspective of the islamosphere the older people sure they remember they recall the book but most younger people i i doubt they would have known his name even or let alone who he was or what the satanic verses were or stuff like this so just and he's now i believe 75 years old at this age bringing this kind of trying to attack him decades and decades after he's become he's just fallen into
oblivion in a such a way that nothing does nothing but demonizes islam now and gives him the the light the limelight once again that he's now being uh nominated for you know global awards once again and his name is being put forward for unprecedented awards that he never achieved during his lifespan i i i don't see what this person um what was his name
mata something hadi matar did and it's very clear to me this is very clear to me that this person hadi matar must be suffering from mental illness it's clearly mental health and i hope that that is recognized for the mental health it is just as when these other crazy people in the united states go and shoot up cinema halls and they go and shoot secondary schools and kill all these people and e and and racist bigots that do this
and they make videos saying we're doing this for the cause for the the white cause and all of these are clearly deemed oh they're just mental health because let's face it most of these people are mental health cases but and i accept that that they are most of these people are always most of these people are mental health cases including the muslim ones it doesn't just change when they're muslim that oh the muslims are not mental health those people are nut cases too they need to be sectioned so it's not oh when they're muslim oh no now it's legitimate it's the guy knew
what he's doing and every no these people are equally cases they're clearly mentally uh they they have mental instability they have some severe mental health problems so i just want to make that clear in condemning that attack okay um
right so right now that said moving forward following this attack the satanic verses and salman rushdie its author have been now brought back into the limelight many people are discussing him people have been googling he's become one of the most googled in the last uh two weeks he has become one of the most googled entities people are trying to find out what it what was he all about what are all these things so let's discuss him let's assess
