Mufti Abu Layth says that Imam Malik, the scholar of Madinah, wore an earring, and cites the biography of Malik written by his own teacher Shaykh Abd al-Ghani al-Daqr [?], one of the great ulama of Sham, in a series on the great Imams. He describes his teacher as an old man with a great sense of humour, well known throughout the Arab world, who gave a weekly lesson in a Damascus mosque on a commentary of Bukhari, was deemed the most knowledgeable person of his era in the Kitab of Sibawayh, won countless awards, and was fascinated to meet a Maliki of Pakistani origin. In that book, he says, the author relates that Malik was fortunate to study with Rabi'a, one of the great scholars of Madinah, and that while still bursting with youth he had an earring in his ear. He adds that another Maliki scholar, in the introduction to a work on the hadith of the Mudawwana [?] whose edition was checked by a Sudanese shaykh, records the same thing.
