What this part covers

machinesummary, machine-written

Ibn Abbas lists piercing the ear among seven sunnahs for a newborn boy, and Hasan and Husayn had their ears pierced and wore earrings, Husayn wearing two. The reports come through Imam Jafar al-Sadiq's chain and an eyewitness account from Karbala.

In more detail

Mufti Abu Layth reads the hadith of Ibn Abbas that seven things are from the sunnah for the boy on the seventh day: he is formally named, circumcised, his ear is pierced, and the aqiqah is given, among other things. He then says that the Prophet's grandsons Hasan and Husayn both had their ears pierced and wore earrings, and that Husayn wore two, one of the kind the Arabs called a qurt on the lobe and one called a shanf on the upper ear. He says the Shia traditions continue to narrate this: Imam Jafar al-Sadiq, the teacher of Abu Hanifa and of Imam Malik in Madinah, transmits through his father Muhammad al-Baqir and Zayn al-Abidin from Husayn a report in which the Prophet told Fatima to pierce the ears of Hasan and Husayn [?], and there are several narrations that the two wore earrings; these, he stresses, are the grandsons of the Prophet and among the greatest people in Islam, and the Imams in the chain are accepted by Sunnis too. He adds narrations that Husayn's ear was pierced at his birth, and a vivid account by one of the men involved in killing Husayn at Karbala, Hani ibn Thubayt al-Hadrami [?], who said he was among the ten standing when Husayn fell and watched him look left and right with both his earrings shaking.
