What this part covers
machinesummary, machine-writtenMufti Abu Layth says debates rarely change minds and feed the ego, so he prefers conversations where people can disagree.
In more detail
The caller says such hadith are hidden gems, and that in religious arguments people naturally become harsh because they feel vulnerable to being wrong; in their own high-iman phase they became defensive and lost a sense of humanity whenever challenged. Mufti Abu Layth replies that the Quran permits debate only in the best manner, and that people seldom accept truths in debates, citing the backfire effect, by which people double down. He says he told someone he does not want to do debates, only conversations on podcasts where people can disagree, because he knows his ego will kick in and it becomes about overpowering the other person. Mufti says that after some twenty-four years of debating he finds himself excelling under pressure, which is a blessing but gets wrapped up with the ego, since debating is about wit and recall on the spot rather than knowledge. He concludes that this is not healthy and not what iman is about, and that conversation and discussion are better.
Position stated
Mufti Abu Layth says debating is so wrapped up in the ego that it is not healthy and is not what iman is about.
“it's just something which you know maybe some people have it some people don't but it is so wrapped up in the ego that it's not healthy and it's not what Iman is about”

that the prophet he had already gone and come back he went to check for the safety like that's me you see it's not about you have the compassion but where the time comes a person is firm firm for the well-being of people not in a thugly intimidation kind of way and I think that's so seriously these hadiths are so they're so mesmerizingly uh you know beautiful and all striking that
you get goosebumps you but yeah I uh uh distracted uh going off there but yeah those those are you those hadiths that you mentioned they're almost like hidden gems you know like we're so caught up in all these loud hadithsis you know at least for me like I was like when I was going through the doubts I was you know I go I search up sunnah.com and I go on all these habits and I search up like keywords and like you know so much to grasp and um just one thing I want to add with what you said um I think that level of emotional
intelligence and and compassion I honestly like I don't know about you but I feel like maybe I'm just not as optimistic right now and where I am in my life but it's hard for me to see that when it comes to like something like religion because like if someone's discussing you know their religious beliefs with someone let's say they're arguing over you know my religion with your religion um I think it's just natural for us to become you know like harsh and like because we become vulnerable to what if we're wrong and they're right and so kind of when I
see these discussions happening maybe at like Speaker's Corner or like even with myself like as as much as I'd like it like to admit it when I was going through like my my high any man every conversation that I was about to have I wanted to like give double and talk about Islam because I was so passionate about it but one thing I that I noticed was I was so um it was so new to me that if whenever someone disagreed with me or challenged my thoughts or challenged my proofs for Islam you know I would instantly become so like uh
defensive and like I would it's almost like I would lose a sense of humanity and I see that I think a lot with these religious um it happens to it's interesting that the Quran when it does say that okay fair enough get into a debate it says okay awesome but only in a way that it's it's better and in in a way that us and from Assam with the same thing of with goodness because seldom do people ever accept truths in debates like it
doesn't it just it has the what they call in Psychology the backfire effect that people Double Down and this is why it's you know you need to be quite very very open-minded to get into a debate with someone and accept what they're saying almost almost never happens uh it is an exceptionally rare case almost like a Black Swan event but the yeah so but you're right and you know often it is the ego and it happens to all of us it's not um you know it's
I guess it's human it's creaturely and I remember somebody saying to me the Mufti we are too certain because I said that look I don't want to do any debates and things and that's and I said look I'll have discussions on podcasts My Mind Trap people want to come on we can talk we can have a conversation we can disagree we can but I don't really want to do it portray as a debate because I know that my ego will kick in and and I mean I it's just something which isn't you know
even if you it's not sincere at that stage you see because it becomes about just overpowering the other person vocally and yeah and and you may be able to do that you know you may be able to because you may be maybe you'll like I find with me you know it's really weird I mean I've been debating or like are in that field if you're gonna say for almost what better part of like what 24 years or something so it's not you know when you argue and debate
for so long you become so skilled at it and it I find myself you know in a debate in the debate pressure mentally excelling like I will if I was to do you know when I debate people or when I used to on the spot I will come up with answers that I would not have thought of before that discussion right there and it it just I mean it's sure it's a blessing but it's also I think can get very wrapped up with the
ego because you see it's it's very The Rush that it will because you will because people are not skilled at debate people are not very intellectually astute in that sense like debating is not just about being intellectual it's about being very witty being on the spot being able to come up with something on them in the moment under pressure being able to recall things under pressure it's not about just knowing things like you can do it but on the spot if that if those three second goal the then the conversation could change or that moment has gone and the person's making a different point now so
it's just something which you know maybe some people have it some people don't but it is so wrapped up in the ego that it's not healthy and it's not what Iman is about you know it's not this this journey isn't about that um it's better that we converse and sure we could yeah we could have like a low level kind of if people I I don't like the word debate but discussion where we could kind of you know yeah Challenge and allow that to to manifest but but yeah I thought no I I really
appreciate you coming on sharing your thoughts and um do look and do stay in touch drop me a message on Instagram I will look out for um your profile and I would say that look don't um I I don't know how old you you seem very young how old are you if you don't mind me asking uh 23 23 yeah very very young yeah 20 years my junior look at that 20 years ago 43 years you know you look you have many
