What this part covers
machinesummary, machine-writtenKahl in 3:46 means mature manhood, which al-Razi says Jesus reached on earth; the reading of the verse as a second coming began only in the late third century with al-Bajali.
In more detail
Mufti Abu Layth says the claim that kahl means an old man may be colloquial Arabic but is not Quranic Arabic: kahl means maturity, the completion of the body when youth is over, which scholars placed at thirty or forty without a fixed age, like middle age, and he cites a line of early Arabic poetry [?] using the word. He reports that Fakhr al-Din al-Razi, one of the heads of Ash'ari creed, wrote that Jesus reached kuhula on earth during his lifetime, and that the tafsir works trace the reading of the verse as a reference to a second coming to al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl al-Bajali al-Naysaburi [?], who died in the 280s AH, with no one among the Salaf saying it before him. He says this is why he speaks of disappointing scholarship, since those declaring deniers kafir contradict their own authorities, and turns to the other verses described as clear.

Position stated
Mufti Abu Layth holds that kahl in 3:46 means mature manhood from about thirty or forty, which Jesus reached on earth as al-Razi said, and that reading the verse as a second coming began only with al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl al-Bajali in the third century.
“you are a complete man and many Olimar said that begins at 30 some said it begins at 40 it doesn't matter it's not a set age it's like saying middle aged”
