What this part covers
machinesummary, machine-writtenClassical scholars disagreed on whether al-Khidr was a prophet or a saint, and many held he is still alive while others denied it. Mufti Abu Layth likens the stories of his appearances to saint legends in other religions.
In more detail
Mufti Abu Layth surveys the classical debates that followed from a literal reading. Some, such as Ibn al-Jawzi and Ibn Ishaq, held al-Khidr was a prophet not sent to a people, since he acted on God's command; al-Baghawi [?] reported that most scholars said he was not a prophet, and others, such as al-Qushayri [?] in his Risala, called him a wali. Al-Nawawi said the majority held he is still alive, and Ibn al-Salah agreed, with stories that he will join the Mahdi and Jesus, that he and Ilyas meet every year at Hajj, or that he drank the water of life; the Sufi Abd al-Razzaq al-Kashani held he was a symbol rather than a real person. Others, including Ibrahim al-Harbi [?], Ibn al-Jawzi and Ibn Kathir, denied he is alive, citing Quran 21:34, and al-Bukhari is said to have cited the hadith that no one alive that night would be alive in a hundred years. Mufti describes stories of al-Khidr consoling the companions, in al-Mustadrak, and appearing on battlefields, as reported from Ibn al-Mubarak, comparing them to Christian sightings of St George and Hindu avatars as folk belief common to all religions.

a hospital every ship now the reason for this was that you see the reason for all of this was that there was a moral now that a lot of the scholars in the past took this as a literal kind of reading now when they took it as a literal reading they kind of got stuck because now they had to explain a lot of what was going on so they had to say first of all who was they that so this became a question so now when they said okay who was cleared on some of them said well
first of all was he a prophet so this became the first kind of debate so many people said that oh and this once again you're gonna get a hell of a lot of debate and discussion going on here so you you're gonna have scholars that say okay he was a prophet for Taylor in the Hobby then they say was he a prophet sent to the people or he wasn't sent to any people so they disagree once again you're gonna get people like ignore Josey coming from the seller even Arbus there's the transmission from him from what happened I'm gonna be they said he
was a prophet sent to people that's why because he says from a file to an Emory I didn't do this myself God commanded me to do this and God only commands prophets so if no Josie took this position Mohammed eveness Huck and so they had this understanding that he must have been a prophet then but he wasn't sent to a man no he says well let the allele at their own and no canon opinion so he was a prophet most people say that yet you have people like bar we have fiddle but are we saying that most of the scholars say he was not a Nabi and other people challenged him for saying that then some people said okay he
wasn't a Nabi he was a wali he was a holy person and this is like a possible Kosh ad in his result of the saw wolf he mentions that then you had another discussion is he somebody who live right throughout the ages so you have people like him and no we saying that Jim huden or majority of the scholars believe that he is still alive and amongst us so he's like living amongst us this soul who kind of travels amongst human beings even a Salah I says who are you named Adam who Jamaa Hirayama so he says that this is even though eveness allah says even though some had the
theme denied this and so you get this this kind of understand some people said he will then combine with the Madi later the Mahdi and Jesus they will all get together fie Masjid al-haram on a Juma you have these kind of stories that emerged you had people like Abdul Razak al kashi who was a Suffolk scholar from the 8th century who actually said hey there was not even a real person he was simply a symbol symbolism that Allah
meant giving that this kind of an expansion in the universe was symbolized by this character of hither and Ely and he mentions the alias Ali salam another prophet that is mentioned in the quran that we don't know much about but there's a lot of stories around was about the kind of the kind of caving in so these were opposites so this was abdul razak share of the radical kashi from about 700 years ago so her worthy in his book said the hither Ali sallam has told us 300 hadith had that a man
that he told him and the people in his time hadith that he actually heard from the Prophet Shaba this is so we went to this extent and then obviously some scholars said look like hospital Iraq he said look let's behave ourselves the heather is not somebody who transmits hadith okay now so most people felt that look Heather was a prophet even Imam Ghazali went that way right so the whole thing then then they have all these interpretations why did he do these things why did he kill the boy
why did God allow him to commit murder and they said well oh this was to save the family later on because the family were going to the family were going to later on really suffer at the hands of this child so God was gonna replace him so you have all of these kind of thing and some people obviously challenged this whole thing certain Muslims felt that hither and ilyas both are alive these two prophets still roam the earth and they meet every year a Hajj okay and that they have drank from the what they
say sherry bomb in a nil hired from the elixir of life so they can't die this is one of the interpretations and some people feel that these two Haidar Ali Salam and Ilyas aleihsalaam meet every night they roam around the earth and they meet and then other people challenge this people said look that's not true Ibrahim Oh Josie I said there's no such Haditha Hitler Ali Salim is alive all these things are our faults even at a mere took that understanding other people I believe everyone Josie may have gone that way even akathisia there used the verse of the Quran that will match Allen Ali by
sharing me in public al hold we have never given any humans eternal life the Imam Buhari is allegedly of this opinion that no Heather died he died and they used the hadith as an example that the Prophet said alright ah come lay let to come Hadi do you see this night they will not be a single person on the planet today than a hundred years from today is still alive meaning that death comes over us all so they say Mamba hardly used that as a Delisle then people have all these stories that all know he did exist then they say well if he existed why didn't he meet the Prophet and the companions so then people say he did they come up
with these stories like in the most other of cavil Hakim you have stories Mullaly how he brings that he went and gave condolences to the companions when people say oh he the profit some people say he will live and eventually will fight the job then you have all these other stories of like people saying they saw either like a bromo Bharat saying especially a lot to do with the battlefield so every time there's this kind of like they they saw somebody ignore Mubarak saying I met this person on the you know we approached my horse and he was like this and then I saw him on the on the battlefield and then I saw him here and
this was hidden so basically what you have is anytime throughout history under certain ominous kind of circumstance circumstances a a kind of all striking figure is met people in their folk belief felt that that was either the way the Christians kind of had this with st.
George or with other people that they they they that they all we saw st. George are when we were in Jerusalem and we saw this and so every time Muslims are kind of going on certain battles or they better certain strange you know kind of figure that it's kind of acting like kind of almost ominously strange and odd and might say some words of wisdom and then you don't see him and they felt oh that must have been hidden a lisanna so this whole issue arises why
because Muslims felt that they needed to explain who this character was why even though the Quran doesn't mention him as Hader but inside Buhari you have this hadith right that he was called hither and then if he's an actual person if he's a person how could he do all these things over he must be a prophet well if he's a prophet was he sent to a people no he wasn't sent to a people but he was instructed so if he used to go around interfering in nature killing people and building things and drowning shapes or with hidden kind of greater good then
does he still continue to do that and then people felt yes of course he's still alive and in fact he still amongst us as Imam Noah we and even a Salah and all these people and seal tea and all these people felt and the truth is people look from a folklore perspective people of all religions have kind of believed in these kind of things it's nothing unique to that kind of Muslim folklore you will see people in Christianity believing that Saints are still kind of these ancient Saints still kind of roam amongst them in Hindu mythology you'll have about avatars kind
of roaming around amongst people interfering with the divine laws of nature and stuff like this and but from a objective perspective there is no such thing as hid are Ali Salaam like that okay the truth is that this was all a vision it was all in a dream and the reason musa alehsalaam was shown those that dream was not that vision was not really it was to reinforce his own mission you see because the three events
