Mufti Abu Layth recounts that Rashid Rida, whom he also calls a father figure of Salafiyya, visited India with a low opinion of Hanafis, and that Deoband invited him with great hospitality to a gathering where Anwar Shah Kashmiri gave the keynote speech in his praise; the Deobandis wished to show they were as grounded in hadith as anyone, and Rida wrote afterwards that the visit to Deoband made his whole trip worthwhile. He says that Rida championed the view that Jesus is not returning while Kashmiri wrote the opposite, yet they honoured each other, and that this is how one disagrees in this religion, not by calling someone a kafir for going against the mutawatir. He then notes that people say al-Shawkani declared the return mutawatir and ijma, which he confirms Shawkani did say.
