What this part covers
machinesummary, machine-writtenSafiyya had told her husband Kinana she dreamt a moon fell into her lap; he accused her of wanting Muhammad and beat her, leaving her eye bruised when she came before the Prophet. Her uncle was a long-standing Muslim and she had spoken well of the Prophet before.
In more detail
Mufti Abu Layth sets out what is known about Safiyya from before: her uncle Abu Yasir [?], her father's brother, had been a Muslim for years, visited and supported the Prophet, and there are sound reports that she too spoke well of the Prophet before Islam. She had recently been married to the chief Kinana [?] for tribal reasons, and told him she had dreamt of a moon landing in her lap, without mentioning the Prophet. Her husband replied that she was obsessed with Muhammad and wanted to be with him, and beat her so badly that she was bruised. In the sahih hadith, when Khaybar is over she comes before the Prophet with her eye green with bruising; he asks what happened, and she says Kinana beat her because of the dream. Amid the aftermath of the battle people make disparaging remarks about her as a Jewish woman, which the Prophet rebukes. In passing Mufti warns viewers against disruptive comments and notes that the difference between a widow's and a divorcee's iddah is basic knowledge.
