Hadith Analysis: If religion was based on reason, we'd wipe lower part of the sock | Mufti Abu Layth

all right okay so there's this hadith people um there's a hadith uh that i'd like to discuss and this is used by many people to say we cannot use reason and they transmit a saying of where he states that uh that if this deen was by reason lokana dino bilaakal

that we would have wiped the lower part of the hoof of the sock but we wiped the upper part so using this hadith or and i say hadith loosely because it's really a statement of the sahabi but uh of ali radhiallahu and but they're saying that ali learned it from the prophet therefore it carries that standard right okay just unpacking this this hadith is uh or this tradition is unacceptable it is utterly weak people it is naive we cannot accept this

this hadith first of all let's begin with the fact that according to the school of medina which is voiced by imam malik we do actually wipe the lower part of the sock just to start off with so point bella point all right second point let's take a look at the hadith people say here must

what does in the words of uh sagar siddiqui the legend poet who was always a drunk he was always drunk people say look at this drunk look at this what does he what does he know about god that's what they would say so sagar says in one of his poems he says that come let us prostrate in this state of intoxication

he said people claim that sagar doesn't seem to remember god so whilst in a state of intoxication let's fall into the truth see coming back to the point so this thing of uh this hadith by saying ali this hadith people is found in 12 approximately 12 different narrations okay the majority of these narrations there's three in abu dhabi okay uh there's one in sunnah dharmi

and there are eight in the muslim okay so the same narration same said in ali same kind of thing one from the muslims is so brief that it doesn't give much detail it just says he did said ali did will do and wiped it doesn't mention one so you can remove that one one in the in abu dhabi says exactly the same so brief you can remove that one that leaves two in abu dhabi we're gonna take a look at one which is confusing okay it begins by stating that

sedna ali began to wipe over the feet so it begins by using the word feet and ends with the word sock bit confusing confusion confusion but we'll hold on to that one the seven narrations in musnad of ahmad all none of them mention wiping over the sock they actually mention wiping over the feet which is what the shia do or they believe you can you can do it's permissible according to the shia teachings because saydna ali used to do it now none of them mentioned the sock the huffing they mentioned wiping over the kadamain

over the feet the one narration in dharmi not only does it mention that wiping over the feet abu muhammad army the scholar of hadith after it states this teaching was then abrogated it was mansukh by the verse of the quran that about wash your feet so you can see that there's eight narrations we've got now huh there's five narrations we've got the intoxications playing in now right so we've got eight narrations seven in the muslims all mentioning that you

wipe over the feet not the sock we're only left with one clear narration in abu dhabi just one where said ali mentions this that oh if the dean was with the arkhan then we wouldn't be wiping over the uh wiping over the would be wiping off the bottom of the sock but we wipe off the top and he doesn't mention foot here he mentions sock okay so we've got one narration now first of all we know that that wasn't the practice because in medina the practice was that people actually wiped under the sack as well that's the school of medina the other thing is this hadith is

transmitted from ali it goes from him you've got abduce and from him this hadith all of these narrations by the way they're all the same they come through the same it's the same event from ali from abduc going through either these two people these two are those scholars of hadith that destroyed hadith for ahlul kufa it has been transmitted that they are made they are muddily seen they are people of tiddlist and every

single rewire here does not mention that they heard it at least means when you can blag at times and you pretend you hurt when you didn't hear so none of them mentioned they heard it it's all an anna uh they say his memory messed up he had dementia he would mix things up at an older age uh atmash was known to have blacked so many different hadith uh he was put in one of the worst kind of modality you have and it's the famous saying is that the hadith of was not destroyed and corrupted except by two abuse
