i want to take a look at a question of what meat is permissible in islam but really this question is a it's secondary it's important but what i want to navigate through is showing how in islam

0:32

we have an incredibly rich and beautiful diversity of thought because remember when i'm speaking about this power of choice i and this this theme of having to choose your path you have to understand that that path is your path even when it's the path of faith sure it may be shared by many people who may be on

1:10

their path of the same faith so but it is still your individual and unique journey make no mistake about that so this dean when we follow it it will give us guidelines it will give us rules regulations it will give us a code of conduct

1:43

but that let's say guidance may often really be guidance for you sure it may be for other people too but what what's important for you is that it is your personal it is you your journey your path your faith that you are going with sure be passionate about it learn about it teach it to people if they ask discuss it

2:23

you know celebrate it but remember people are on their own journey that your choices will often result in your outlook which will shade and give you a lens and it's a perspective on the world including your faith so it will tell you something now this is why i often say that in islam there are so many ways of looking at something and that's fine if you follow a path that somebody says something you follow those things and

3:02

that's how it should be for you if somebody else follows something different then that's how it is for them islam is about celebrating that diversity it is colorful it is beautiful it is amazing and it may seem confusing at times to people but that's okay it's not you see people may say well if there's all these different rulings what do i do which one do i you follow the one you follow it doesn't matter it is a path it is a choice you see the main thing is your devotion to god you may be devoted to him in this guidance that you get

3:42

that you follow take it you know somebody else may have a different outlook doesn't matter what matters allah says it is not your sacrifices or your prayers or your you know these things that reach god it is your devotion see so the choice really begins in the now let's so i wanted to take a case study as an example to demonstrate and reflect that colorful diversity in islam because people often say look oh this person says um

4:20

i don't know saying happy new year is is haram and this person says it's not haram what should we do how can there be such differences oh my god this person says you have to wear in the cab and this person says no you they can wear the himar the veil and this person says that oh no just modesty is the ruling and there is no oh oh this person says uh this is haram and smoking cigarettes is haram and this person says smoking cigarettes isn't haram and this person says this and this person and they say well how can all these things be they can't be because you see the prism

5:00

through which they are viewing things is that their journey is the only journey that everybody must take and islam is black and white and the truth is that yes in matters of faith of god in saying is does god exist and is god one sure to you it is a dichotomous reply it is a binary to us in faith but within islam you see the sharia the rulings sharia means a reservoir we drink from who drinks from the reservoir everybody everything

5:38

do only humans drink from a reservoir what the hadith in the imam malik brings that the the the animals are drinking from the reservoir somebody says to he says he says yes he says to the person who owns the the little the reservoir that is do animals and beasts of predatory animals and do all kinds of animals drink from you and um

6:12

says we drink from where other creatures drink from don't get us into this metaphorically taking from that here that look what i'm trying to say is the sharia sharia means of reservoir it is a collection of water and water you can't distinguish as a binary this part of the water means this this part of the water means it may even have colors it may have shades it may have an undercurrent it may have a different uh reflection it may seem green from here and yellow from there and maybe just tr and just opaque from here and it may seem like that just the way the light is

6:50

reflecting of it but but you know what it is a source of life water but don't make but you can also drown in water you can also ruin plants by over trying to be obsessive trying to be cruel by flooding them with water see so metaphorically taking that let's come back to this journey because here you have a question i wanted to use food as a case study because it is so ubiquitous and it is what

7:29

we call in islam it is something which concerns everybody and every single day of their lives it concerns them so you'd imagine that if there was ever a ruling in islam to be so clear and so restrictive and black and white it would be about food surely because yeah i get it somebody may ask about interests of banks and yeah but not everybody's an economist and not everybody has wealth and somebody may speak about the rulings of farming but not everybody owns land and somebody may

8:07

speak of these things sure but not everybody but everybody eats food man woman child elder you name them the healthy the sick the rich the poor everybody needs food to survive so surely if this if we can take this case study as a as a lighthouse which will beam and guide us to how the attitude should be

8:47

and the nuances towards the rest of the sharia so if this is very black and white then fine everything let it be black and white and if this shows you a rich colorful diversity then we just accept and we should embrace and celebrate this beautiful diversity of islam and if it's confusing it's okay because you see things in life are complex you follow what you follow and there is that power of choice so let's take a look at this beginning with

9:26

what meat is permissible okay so right now let's get that up here so speaking of meat and i've brought different extracts here just i mean there's so many but i've just selected some to kind of just show um that have some references and things so when we're speaking of food

9:58

let's take a look at meat as as the case study and the question is well what kind of meat and we're going to restrict it generally to three categories the sea the land and the ear okay so creatures that that pretty much sums it all up now beginning with this

10:25

seafood here we begin with a diversity so according to um according to the maliki method that everything

11:21

the second opinion now there are certain evidences for this and we're going to take a look at them shortly let's just understand what the rulings are why do they then disagree okay so so you've got one understanding the maliki's have said everything in the sea is halal some shafis have said that position 2 is that so except a frog crocodile so some amphibians there and snakes those kind of like they're saying snakes that also live in the sea okay

12:01

this is the humbly perspective and this is also some of the shaft by the way okay have said this as well and you can see the reference there is in both and much more now okay so what are we saying so far let's we're just beginning with see

12:41

me animal or what we can eat from the sea and we've said well according to the malakia every single thing every single thing sharks even even if it's we'll look at that even if it's amphibian so they've mentioned frogs and this doesn't mean you have to eat them but it means it's not haram you name it any kind of fish any kind of squid anything that is of the seas to the opposite end the hanafi is saying everything in there is haram except fish only and even dead fish are

13:18

according to them okay and then i don't know if it's in the middle but somewhat i suppose more towards the malakia uh you've got the shafa ia and the hanabila saying well okay exclude frogs and uh crocodiles and um and snakes but the rest is halal okay and according to malik even crocodiles everything is halal and there is diversity but but not in this in the sea they they pretty much agree everything uh is halal so okay so what is this so just to give an example

13:57

what is this based on so the first statement is hunting or yeah hunting or taking uh food from the sea and it's food is a sustenance for the travelers as well

14:30

so it includes now according to this interpretation it's hunting and here they understood as in what the sea spits out as food so meaning the animal is already dead so if the fish is dead it doesn't matter it's halal according to the malikiah okay and the hadith of the prophet sallallahu alaihi which is in the matra and in the four major books as as well as ibn hussein

15:04

okay and they mentioned and you can see there that sahal bukhari and this is what he has mentioned in this discussion of intel um okay so what about the second opinion second opinion going to which is uh the hanabila and some of the shafi's so we're looking at the same verse but the choice of perspective

15:35

and they exclude exempt uh things like uh frogs because there's a hadith that uh ahmed and abu dawud and nasseri and hakim and these hadees transmit that the prophet the prophet prohibited killing frogs okay now uh there's some discussion about the hadith but that's irrelevant right now we're just talking about this is the evidence they use and they said as you can see uh this discussion is in nosferae and other books that yadullu do and they say and why not crocodiles because they eat people

16:14

duh and why not snakes because they are from the mustache because allah says in the quran there's a verse of the quran that is a generic verse that makes the good things halal and those that are kind of repulsive makes them haram or disgusting now the question is the habit so here you can see some of these people like the sheriff saying well we're using that as a

16:52

principle to say well whatever we find khabib must be haram so snakes are found kind of to be repulsive so they must be haram the maliki are saying no sure here when allah says he makes the things the repulsive things haram those are those things he has made haram not what you find repulsive so if i as a person find a chicken repulsive does not make it haram so this you can see how the reasoning differs and they you see their perspective based on their choice of how

17:30

to understand things so we can see that now coming moving back in there you can see so okay you've got the the uh the perspective the first the malakia now the third the hanafi perspective you've got here uh you see they use this verse of the quran

18:00

that these things have been made haram the dead have been made haram blood and the meat of swine uh uh allah did not say that that the dead from the land has been made haram he just said the dead so based on that if the dead is from the sea it's still the dead so the hanafi is a dead fish are haram right so they use this verse and you can see the other verse as well where you had allah makes haram for you

18:38

so whatever other than fish they consider to be repulsive so they think that if it's not a fish it's repulsive to us so therefore it's haram because allah says he makes the khaba is the haram or mean and allah you see it says the thing is that it's mentioning uh about that this that hunting from the sea but they say things like uh frogs and crabs and snakes are not entirely sea creatures so because they're amphibians

19:18

and also their habit so you can see this is in fatal kadir discussing that so you can see now these three different outlooks one school that is using this verse say everything in the sea is halal allah is saying that so everything is even if it lives on land but it's still halal the people in between saying sure everything in the sea is kind of halal but we're going to make exempt those things we find repulsive because they're habit because allah says so we find frogs

19:59

repulsive we find crocodiles kind of repulsive but also at the same time the prophet forbade to kill frogs now the malekia would say yes to kill frogs as a sport to kill them but we're not talking about food those who want to eat them as food that's different to kill any animal is for sport would be haram so now you've got okay so you've got this then you've got on the other end the hanafi's saying well no allah says but he says by say the baha'is hadith that uh the prophet

20:39

made a turn two dead things have been made halal for us as in two we don't need to sacrifice a samakh and al-jarad locusts and fish and therefore fish is the only halal thing from the sea anything that's predatory anything that eats sharks that eat people or that do things like that or that live on the land or amphibians or haram and they are from and also even dead fish are from the meta so it's haram so you've got these three huge diverse perspectives about creatures about seafood

21:18

think about it whether you can eat a shark a seahorse an octopus uh depends on the mother cat if you can eat crocodiles can you eat um i mean you see so depends where you stand as a footnote i i've had a crocodile burger many years back it was quite interesting crunchy but okay so you see you've got a diverse spectrum so to some people if it's haram they follow that opinion take it you follow that opinion that's your devotion to god if you follow this other opinion that's the

21:57

method you follow it's your devotion to god but okay let's let's go back because that's so far it's taking a look at creatures of the sea okay now okay now very quickly just looking at you've got here amphibians um that look vibrant what do we say about that and you can see there look they mentioned things like frogs again tortoises uh sorry turtles crabs

22:38

categorically considers this stuff um so you can call it and i've explained that already and you can see this is discussed in the subsea of shankriti and it's discussed also in the shuttle kabir of tartir and nowhere speaks about it in the much more and these references the relied upon position with the shafa is is

23:08

every dead creature from the sea is halal except frogs and they mentioned that and some of them said except tortoises or turtles and then snakes and then also some kind of like chimps and things like that it primates if they're around the the sea um and some people said there's this sea birds as well they've included them um but but generally most of them would consider them to to be halal okay um so look a summary of these opinions just there number one on the left-hand

23:45

side in the maliki it just it's halal categorically unrestricted except frogs they don't categorically not and um so and then that which is uh so so kind of sea birds with the exception of that the others there must be some kind of um like a see when they say sacrificing these animals they don't mean slaughtering they just mean some kind of intentional

24:23

um you kind of you you have to intentionally you have to act in i suppose bringing as sad as it sounds but in hunting or killing that animal okay it's it can't just be dead that's the opinion there but the humble is just very quickly so all the animals that they're mentioning all of them they have to have some and it can be its own so it doesn't have to be so for example if a person was hunting a shark or they're hunting a crocodile it doesn't have to be that they i mean it's not they don't do

25:03

anything like slaughtering but it could be that they have a particular a kind of like a a gun tool that that kind of that kills it that that would be the the cut so it doesn't have to be but whatever it is it's an intentional kind of act that they do and according to the hanafi's none of this is permissible categorically because it's not fish okay so you can see there um an interesting um discussion there right there so so and keep that in mind next time and this was a slight distinction or an issue which i won't go too much into but

25:43

we'd spoken earlier on about the pig and this was a fascinating point i thought i'd highlight and that is about satiation that if you were eating something which was haram but you were allowed to eat it because let's say you were starving and the quran says if a person is starving and they really fear for the for themselves they can eat pork so the question is can you eat it till your fill okay to your fill can you eat it like get full and or must you only just eat a small amount and the scholars disagree and they say look that la yuba la shiva and that you can't eat to your fill you can just eat enough

26:21

to get by and that's one of the understandings of imam ahmed and some malikis had said that however and this is the more popular one ibn arush mentions it and it's one of the opinions of and and and they have these evidences for it and shohani discusses it in his native author as well and i thought well okay that's an interesting discussion because you see eating to your fill it's interesting because why is it interesting because it's no longer just about well you're not

27:01

starving you see because the moment the discussion is once it becomes halal in that essence in that gathering is it now halal for you and these people like malik and the opinion one opinion of shafa is saying that this is now halal just you can eat your fill it's an interesting discussion although not um i i thought it tied in more so with the discussion we had on on on pig and pork but moving back to this point right so right so birds of um so we've looked at

27:41

seafood and then there's land and then there's the the sky so birds now most importantly let's go to that on the land and because it really is a bit of an eye opener the diversity in this and you can see here that look so the thing is can we eat predatory beasts and you can see some pictures there tigers lions cheetahs can can people eat that i'm not saying they need to eat that or this needs to be

28:20

food surely it probably most likely isn't but these wild beasts of prey um are they halal in islam wolves and stuff like this i'm not saying people necessarily eat these things but if they did anything that is considered wild and uh dangerous like that so it could include and by extension people actually include elephants in that because they say the hadith mentions nab this long extended teeth and they say that they're taking the horns of the elephant as an example although it's not

28:59

it's teeth but all these animals that are wild and harmful and can be predatory especially those that are carnivorous and can we eat them now you may be surprised to learn that once again there's a beautiful diversity in in understanding that that first uh position of the group of ulama that this is haram categorically and they and from them you'll find the hamburies the sherpa is the hanafi and you can see this discussion in al-mughani or so

29:38

all of these and the allele for that is from the hadith from the sun from the sunnah that the prophet islam said and one of the populations from abu sabha that the prophet sallam said that the rest of them transmitted but usually this hadith is in it's even in the mata that the prophet forbade

30:09

that every creature or every bird with with its kind of talons or claws and every um predatory beast that has that is that has these kind of canines uh or these kind of sharp incisors sharp teeth is haram so you can see that there is a hadith this so this is why these methods have already said that well polythermi now look at the second

30:40

another this is not it may be discouraged but it is not haram and this is the apparent reading of the mutable and it's the mashup and there is another opinion that that is haram according to the so there is an opinion in that one there's obviously much diversity um and and they and those who support that say that imam malik brings this hadith in the mata and it's you can see the minis

31:27

i don't think malik says that part i think that part might be i'll have to double check that i don't believe i think this person wrote that is mistaken the but imam malik does bring it in the mata and this is why those people like ibn abdulbar who um who who who feel that all this is haram say that the fact that imam malik bought it in his mother is the reason um because he's trying to teach you it's haram but the other uh of the madhhab say that that's not the case they say that imam malik brought it here to show you that he's aware of the hadith

32:07

so it's not that he didn't know and this is fascinating so let's just let's just unpack this a bit why because look how on earth does this go unchecked can we eat tiger meat can we eat lions can we eat you know can we can people eat this stuff can they eat you think this would be clear in islam and the reason that this diversity exists is to show you that you see these rules yes they are important

32:44

but they are diverse and it doesn't like people have made a choice of their perspective and you have a choice but then what matters is your devotion if you follow the hanafi mother and you stick devotedly but you have no right to condemn for example a shaffer a or a maliki when they and likewise in people's methods they have a choice as well on what method they follow and and that's a different discussion for a different day but let's get back to this right so let's take a look at this because this is so honestly mesmerizingly fantastic as a

33:22

discussion to show the diversity that you see you've got to see and this is the verse of the quran they use in suratul that's allah says tell them i do not find anything haram for a person eating for a person who is eating anything haram except in yakuna meta except that if it's carrion like dead meat already it's already dead ultaman ultima oh blood that has been shed to drink blood like that because people would do that with their sacrifices and to the pagan gods or

34:02

the the meat of or swine meat pork for inaugurates these things have a rich a filth to them and that's all of them the drinking that sacrificial blood and also eating carrying dead meat that has been left so even if it's a halal animal like let's say a goat but it's found dead because this often became a source of infestation and it would often lead to diseases and things like this so

34:35

or that meat which is offered to other gods is haram why by extent because of how they're offering it so even if a person was offering a chicken to zeus or a pagan god that becomes whosoever was however desperate out of starvation or circumstances and they ate it then your lord is all forgiving now this is the verse that is the backbone to this because according to this verse apart from these four things nothing else is haram to eat

35:15

so you think what that doesn't make any sense but that's this is the backbone and we can see here look and in uh look he's saying because this hadith some people claim that this is mansur and um some people say no that this ayah some people say this is abrogated others say no it's still standing

35:50

up so these three companions transmit this but the thing is some people transmit different things from them transmitted from him that there is nothing haram edibly like in terms of eating clearly there is no clear haram food item except what was mentioned in this ayah now look at that difference right so

36:30

ibn dad and he is one of the major malekies from the east from the iraqi intel ayah this ayah encompass it encompasses that every animal being permissible ayah accept what was exempt in this ayah minal also

37:20

has this category of that which is uh silent in islam so if you move towards the center you've got quran and he begins by saying you see the question is when was this verse revealed so many people said this verse was revealed in makkah now some malikis like ibn arabi another say it may have been revealed in mecca but it was also revealed in medina right at the end towards the end of prophethood so that's according to our book he says

38:01

that when from that today we have completed this theme was revealed this verse was revealed with that and no verse was revealed after it to abrogate it okay and just to see once again a great maliki legend on the left-hand side from kitab hello

38:54

students he says these things are haram because of the hadith okay that hari who's from the iraqi and the legend from awkward who has his commentary on the master of ibrahim and his great maliki from the iraqi teachers of abdullah

39:39

that they say that look allah says tell them i do not find any food to be haram any food to be haram for somebody that is trying to eat except except right let me just pause that except these four things that are mentioned in that verse in surat al-anam 145 so okay just to clarify that once again because why is this why is this so phenomenal

40:16

this is showing us how diverse and tolerant islam is you got a person eating tigers for god's sake and you got somebody saying crabs are not permissible and you got somebody eating sharks and this concerns every day every living soul has to eat and look at how wonderfully colorfully bright this reservoir of islam which is called the sharia is and it is then a choice of how we

40:56

understand things and then it is a choice of what we are devoted to it is not about the other it's not about is he eating uh kangaroos or elephants or tigers or wolves or not saying you need to but is he it's not it's not my job to please i am devoted to my path and i go with that okay somebody else wants to follow that that's fine that's their path you see islam was never and then just to clarify once again from the school of medina here we've got so let me just bring up here

41:33

i brought some commentaries on and just to show so you've got sharm this i believe the first one on the right hand side uh is uh elish i believe right so that's a leash and the other one is and you can see that verse 145 that i do not find anything tell the person who wants to eat i find nothing except these four okay what are the four that allah mentions that you've got very clearly carrying dead meat okay spilt blood pork

42:11

and that which is sacrificed to other gods so really there's just three because the sacrifice to other god can be a norm like can be a halal animal but that because they sacrificed it to another god it becomes so it's more by by contingency whereas okay carry in as well by contingency because really it could be a chicken or a goat or sheep but because it's dead it's haram so really you're just being told about pork is the only creature in islam that the quran categorically tells you to stay away from the rest by contingency you can stay away from if it's founded

42:50

if it's offered to another god etc according to this understanding of the school of medina and i'm not saying look somebody may say that look somebody may say but yes uh sure you know we get that but doesn't the school of medina also disagree on this and it does it colorfully disagrees you know you're going to get the whole of the iraqi in going one way the madani going another way but the point is this is in the in the major books it's not something that is a rare hidden away kind of what they call this is what khalil builds his mukhtasar upon which is the relied upon

43:28

kind of text within the maliki method so the point is not that every maliki must follow this and believe this and i'm sure there's many malikis that don't but this is a clear understanding within the maliki method but clear understanding and it doesn't mean that you need to follow it but it's just showing the diversity and how we must be tolerant so let's take a look at this the mother of khalil this verse in the cut okay the cut is the kind of slaughtering and straight after verse 145 from suratul

44:03

that it showed that the the so it showed um right i think they've actually got a spelling mistake here because what they're trying to say is it shows that what's not here is not haram so apart from these things it shows the rest of the things are not haram however he mentions i believe this is he mentions that since it doesn't it's not always necessary that if i don't mention something

44:41

i'm saying it's halal therefore he feels that's why the maliki considered it so he's giving his kind of reasoning and why did they say makruden and he says look out of caution so the madani kind of students like ibn nafi ibn kanana like ibn al-maji shoon these people and ibn habib is from andalus but he's a big proponent of that madani kind of thought in his they're saying these things are haram and you can see ibn abdulbar also influenced with that a few centuries

45:20

later arguing for that as well and he says look uh and it said the popular opinion it is because it is in essence like an elephant or a tube and he and he says these things like you're going to have cheaters and tigers and stuff like this so going to the left-hand side and this is from alma work in his commentary under babuf

46:08

says i don't like eating meat of predatory animals i don't like it says neither things like fox well it's the north uh wolves neither wild cats these kind of actual wild cats well insi and neither docile wild animal so if somebody had tamed some of these animals he says i don't like eating that kind of meat well i say i'm in a siba then bhaji who's a great legend abu alital bhaji of mali

47:08

student so it is haram because of the hadith and he says he says those predatory beasts that don't attack you so like things like like foxes and stuff like he he mentions wolves i don't know why he thinks wolves don't attack but what duba and hyena well herrera or some wild cats from hadoon so according to them these are not

47:45

look there's two opinions but you can see very clearly my the um you can see in parenthesis on the uh in both of them and in the left-hand side uh in brackets this is khalil his actual text saying it's makru and he builds his methab upon uh the um upon the iraqi on this issue and this is also what people like qarafi and others highlight and ibrahibi seems to go in line with that saying the verse is still clear and just to sum it up i thought this was a nice summary

48:23

this was why abdul rahman al jazeera the al-azhari scholar who has a popular book on according to the four methods i thought why not let's take a let's just have a quick reading of that where something he says look uh that he says uh from the birds that any animal any bird sorry that uh he says any bird that has its kind of clawed its kind of talon uh it's it's like a bird of prey um that he says like eagles or whether it's

49:02

going to be falcons and things like this uh are all haram okay um and he says what what is not of that category like doves and pigeons and stuff like this he says that is halal and he says and he's giving a summary of the mathematics and he says so all predatory beasts are haram that those that kind of they attack and hunt other animals kill like a lion tiger wolf bears including bears will feel welcomed and and monkeys and all

49:41

these things and he mentions they are haram and he includes the the jackal and wildcats but then he says as well look uh you can see that every animal that is pure which is pure is uh is halal as long as it is not harmful to you so if they had a poison then it's by extension haram it's not haram in and of itself but by extension because it will harm you

50:16

obviously it means that as long as here halal means you haven't stolen it and stuff says you can eat predatory birds birds of prey he says that's absolutely halal look the second part he says that maliki say you can eat all kind of beasts of prey whether it's lions tigers etc he says he says except when it comes to monkeys they had two opinions some said haram some of the malkins some of the maliki said it's not haram it's

50:55

just makuru you don't eat it but it's not haram he says in the relied upon opinion and things like this so you can see here the reason um i've i i've highlighted that is just to show that look there is this uh rich diversity within islam and i think it's important and i've just got a summary of it here that look that the malakia everything sees skyland

51:32

except pig carrion etc and this is obviously a simplification the chef they do uh no predatory animals they do allow the shepherd yeah actually do allow hyenas because there's a hadith in termiti and abu dawud that they could eat hyenas and they do allow foxes and things like that and they allow birds of prey uh especially several words of praying sorry they exclude sorry they exclude birds of prey and frogs and crocodiles the hanafia you can only eat things like beef mutton poultry all kinds of

52:10

poultry birds and and fish that's it so you can see here one madhhab which is the school of medina and on the other hand the school of kufa and this huge spectrum between them of what is halal and haram to eat and it's you know almost everything almost like from if you're looking at creatures and i didn't include here things like um things like and these kind of things like insects and stuff like that because the malakia would say that none

52:49

of these things are haram although they may be discouraged because people don't like them and they're kind of repulsive and also they take into consideration harm so they'll say like can you eat a snake and they'll say well if the snake is going to poison you then obviously it's haram because of the poison by contingency by extension not by default the same thing with insects so you see and and this is not to say so the malikia often criticize people say the maliki say eating dog is not haram and that's true i mean many malikis because according to this especially the

53:28

arakayin and that school would say that dog meat is not haram it's but that's not because of dogs that's because of every animal on earth according to them apart from bar pig is not haram it's only macro or permissible or not macro and some disagreeing the very and there is a diversity between them but i'm going with that school that says well like the iraqi saying that nothing is haram so obviously a dog is also a creature so by extension somebody could say well ah so that means dog is not haram and it isn't according to that but that doesn't mean that they eat dog it doesn't

54:07

obviously that that's that's repulsive but it's just saying that look it's not declared haram so just as wolf is not haram tiger is not haram a lion is not haram monkeys are not haram elephants are not haram beers are not haram so snakes are not haram so their point is that these things are this may be discouraged to eat and stuff like that and people generally don't eat them as far as culture and convention goes but the ruling here is to differentiate you see now this is the genius you can differentiate

54:46

between culture religion like what allah is saying and human temperament you see like i could see a lizard and find it disgusting repulsive bob it's repulsive yet it's clearly halal according to most people okay even according to some hanafi's it's halal but but the thing is that because it's in the hadith that they the some of the companions were eating bob they were eating lizard and the prophet found it repulsive and and they thought it's haram and the hadith is a popular hadith and the prophet said and they said shall we stop eating it haram and the prophet

55:25

said he said that he said my people where i'm from we never used to eat this he says i find it nauseating to look at it like that like i find it repulsively disgusting but it but it's not haram you see my temperament should not dictate islam you see and that's the genius of it and this is why the the school of medina highlights that sure you know i'm not saying you need to eat these animals you don't need to eat these creepy crawlies or eat these predatory beasts or try to

56:02

eat eagles or crows or things like you don't need to do that and many cultures won't do things like that and many people may find some of these things repulsive and that's that's normal and you should find these things repulsive but just because you find it repulsive doesn't mean god has declared it see so there is a like a fine genius of thought but even more amazing than that is the is the is the kind of tolerance and respect to each other that a person could be eating frogs for god's sake i mean i i think in in

56:41

france i'm pretty sure they eat it is it i think it's a delicacy i could be wrong but somebody could be eating frogs and that could be disgusting and somebody said oh my god but it's haram for you not haram for them you see they are on that mother and you may struggle with this you see you may say no i can only function with black and white but that's okay you see because you take your black and white keep it to yourself and you practice your faith and you you forward your devotion to god and your

57:20

devotion is what allah rewards you on you see so taking this as a case study it it's we learn one the diverse rulings of the shariah of of of eating meat what kind of meat is permissible whether almost everything is permissible bar pig to almost very few things apart from very common uh meat products which are commonly found like beef mutton chicken uh poultry that that kind of stuff that's it so you've got this huge diversity

58:00

but i think the primary lesson that comes out here that i want to share with this and i was using this as a case study exemplifying this that in islam you see the path the reservoir is different for different people and that's okay you see you don't and you we don't impose our our rendition our perspective our choice even of how we see things we don't impose that on somebody else we devote ourselves to what we believe and we go with that okay and everybody in their own ways

58:39

coming from a place of love and everybody look at all these methods that said this they are all using the words of allah and you know somebody may say with us confusion i find it amazingly beautiful you see they're all coming from a place of love and the quran with its dynamism allows people to understand different things and then they're not to condemn each other and this is one of the beauties of traditional islam it's a classical islam and i'm not this is not i'm not trying to attack

59:17

let's say salafi islam or this but in all honesty this is one of the struggles major struggles that salafi islam faces because it does not have such a colorful landscape and it doesn't have the the tools it doesn't know what do we do in the face of such ambiguity because it's only taught that things must be black and white but it enters a realm of 4k color and doesn't know what to do here because it so what they will do is just say well okay well there's only one right answer

59:56

here and the rest have really got it all wrong and that right answer is what for example my teachers have said whereas traditional islam would say sure my answer is right for me your answer is right for you it's okay the paths that lead to god are many but allah is one and our devotion is what counts may allah bless us all really and and may he kind of enable us to to to really open our hearts to diversity

1:00:35

and to be more tolerant and compassionate and not to feel that my what i follow i must impose on people i mean so people with that let's uh move on i've um somebody and i'm just going to take a look at some questions this is beautiful it is it is and i get it can be scary but that's okay don't don't be scared it's not you know some people told me that look oh about by mentioning this you know people get confused

1:01:18

but i get that but that's just the they need to they need to grow yet you see and they will grow insha allah they will grow i get it it's like trying to you see when you teach a child about something slightly complex with diversity the child brain is still developing so it struggles with understanding complex like it'll say so for example it's easy to understand a hero and an anti-hero a villain a story but it's not the child would become it's difficult for understanding drama where there is no one right guy everybody's kind of right

1:01:57

and wrong and everybody does so this is more complex that comes with more adult thought so yeah i get that and that's um hey people i must say interesante this is the galaxy uh 4 where watch i do like it right so right let's uh move on shook it on sugar and nora i appreciate it i really uh wanted to share that because i wanted one people

1:02:36

have asked me the ruling of me but to be honest that was not my motive to share it for just teaching people the ruling of meat my motive was really to just show people that you can take something as so fundamental as food which is necessary for every single human being on earth that lives so and you would take the expectation that surely you know if you come to this with blinkers you think well islam must have just made a clear list and then i show you this wonderful diversity and you think what do i do now and and you're going to have a moment of

1:03:16

there's going to be like an existential tremor a shock like almost like an existential fever but in that fever the immune system is working for growth okay and what happens post exposure is that you will start to grow and your faith will grow in beautiful ways so i mean right
