and somebody who taught um f regionally within Egypt to the malikia and to other people amongst his students were also the populara was also amongst his type of students unfortunately there isn't too much available about this author which is quite unique given the fact that his text has actually become so widespread and accepted there isn't actually much about him available to the extent that even it's difficult to even find in what year he died all we know he was around in this
century and he was somebody that was from there and he taught and he was an Alazar graduate and so on and uh but we don't know much more than that actually right so that said [Music]
IMD right just before we begin there he says that some the she is just beginning by saying some people that some brothers some students of knowledge have asked me to teach to kind of lay out something upon the maab of IM Malik and he says and I have responded to their request in the hope of reward from Allah subhana wa taala um so having said that he then
[Music] begins [Music] okay now in fact I'll read the next section as well and then we'll [Music] [Music] translate [Music]
okay right he says he begins by saying that no and try and follow along if you do have a copy so you're actually kind of familiarizing yourself with the Arabic as well he says know that may Allah Grant you success that the things which break wo invalidate woo are of two
categories some at this point by the way have split them into three but I'll explain that he says okay or so is a ritual impurity and I mean by that something which is not an actual impur we're talking about ritual impurities because they could be different to actual impurities and [Music] then the causes of or potential causes of ritual
impurities so and then some people have added a third category which they've just simply called that that which is not a cause nor an impurity and really that will well I'll mention that in a moment when we get to it but as to Ritual impurities then he says five and before we begin and uh before we begin uh I would like to say that as the Hadith teaches
us okay there is not modesty this is not this is translated sometimes by people to say that there is no modesty in the dean which is a bit of an absurd translation but what it actually means or regarding okay so Fe can mean many things fee can mean in it can mean on it can mean has many um like it says as you know I'll have them kind of crucified on the trees not inside of the tree but so like this you have many
different in usage for the for the position fee and amongst it is regarding so the prophet Sall Al said in Hadith that uh where the person uh where the person enters the Hellfire not in a cat but regarding a cat that they that they kind of imprison the cat don't feed him and so on and so the whole point being that can mean regard that there is no regarding any matter of the theme so just to kind of clarify that so
now the impurities are five now what these will simply come down to is issues regarding at this point the invalidating factors regarding the private parts that's what it will generally kind of be uh categorized within so he says say three he he gives the first three which are all fluids from which are released from the private parts and he's began with so urine
preseminal fluid and also uh Woody which can a fluid which may be released at times so this these are three things which which will break the W of any individual okay so just to be clear and then he says and he says so all of these are really just to do with the private parts the other two he says if a person went uh to the toilet excrement um also he says passing
wind so that's in the Maliki it is very clear based on the verse of the Quran what is it or that one of you comes from having relieved him or herself so having come from the toilet that they must then as the verse kind of states that this is what kind of breaks wo so the Mal is very clear on this it doesn't say other things we're not talking about things like bleeding we're not talking about anything U irregular the Maliki um Iraqi school had kind of termed it very well
they had [Music] said and thees were really unique in their approach on kind of putting things in almost like neatly kind of compartmentalizing them so they just said any natural ex excretion from its natural orifice meaning really just the two when a person goes to the toilet that but it must be natural it will break the woodo so for example um just saying as an example uh bleeding wouldn't break the
woodo from there even though that could be seen as like an excretion of some type but it's not it must be a natural type of excretion now so that's the the kind of principle they came came up with and it is quite useful because um it means everything must stay natural but all and the Malik you'll see is very big on keeping things natural in line with nature right okay as to the causes or the potential
causes of ritual impurities for Num and then and these will really revolve around Consciousness or reasoning just to kind of give you as a precursor so it says sleep sleep and that is of four types he mentions he says something which is like deep and a long long and deep sleep which will unanimously break W so if a person knocks off wakes up 5 hours later and still questioning have I still got W that um is that that really person's got needs to prioritize other types of
learning then because that W is definitely gone right so short yet heavy also breaks the wo short and light does not break wo long yet light sleep would not uh he says not break it but it's recommended to repeat your W from it and from this you will see that there were certain
Hadith um where really uh you find that the prophet Sall Ali wasallam said which is a inmed and ab and many likeah Andi and said it was uh it was a good Hadi that they did of it the Hadith states that a person that the eyes are almost a like they help a person maintain a grip of what is going on so meaning that what the prophet meant by this was the
fact that Consciousness he he using the eyes as an example meaning as opposed to being asleep but when the prophet Sall said that when a person sleeps then let him repeat his W and this is further explained by another Hadith um or an by pass where he says that when a person lies down that his joints and his his body relaxes so the potential of him or her having broken their wo is likely and therefore it's it's accepted that they
must repeat their wo but there are other Hadith and we do accept that because where do we get this angle of it has like sleep doesn't break w because there is a Hadi of that the that the that they would and that's Muslim and bukari that that the sahab would wait for Salah and whilst they were waiting for that they would doze off and he says that until their heads would kind of drop like that and they would keep kind of like kind of getting up and I mean mean meaning that
the heads are kind of nodding off and then they would get up for Salah and they would not repeat their W so is that because they weren't unconscious yeah because unconscious the definition of sleeping no what we're saying is sleep has levels as well although we don't want to get technical I mean there are like different people I know psychologists have definitely that have studied it have graded it up to four uh different types of levels and but that's not the point but amongst it what is is you have what will be cons what will be considered as deep sleep and what I would kind of just to kind explain that to you would I would say that if you had
something in your hand and it fell then consider that deep sleep that you've entered you've gone beyond that threshold so if you were holding something and the moment it would kind of like let's say if it would drop if it was off that if sleep was of that type then that you've gone beyond the threshold really so woodo should be done so that's just a guideline I'm not saying that's aith that's just me trying to help you understand it right okay
now okay shuk this is also part of this category that I said is to do with reasoning like sleeping is to do sleep is to do with Consciousness and reasoning like you you you lose your ability to reason you lose your Consciousness so likewise he said also those causes amongst those reasons or causes are it says your the inability to Reason by for example a bout of insanity or some type of if a person has some type of psychological disorder where they do kind of lose their mind at times unconsciousness intoxication all these
things would invalidate the W okay it's not just ifying the intoxication just saying in case people are saying but it's just saying that the intoxication is also something that would invalidate W now this is really going into what some people had said you know what some people put as a third category saying that which isn't a c potential cause neither is it a an ritual impurity and that is um
apostasy apostasy invalidates wo I know if a person does apostate he's got greater issues or she's got greater issues than W but why is this a point the point is because Allah mentions in the Quran that those people who do disbelieve that that that this person's actions have been kind of
this person's actions have been invalidated so therefore it includes any acts of worship that the person was involved in and amongst them was W so therefore so it's more a byproduct M it's not a key it's not like trying to say oh you know also you've apost ah you haven't got W I don't think that's what it's trying to say because that wouldn't really make sense say oh well the tons of aposta and that which is again I'll have to repeat my w I don't think that's it's not arguing it from the angle so just in case sometimes some people just think this is a bit absurd it's not it's just
coming at it from a technical angle that's all now did mhm
okay sh right okay he's still in the category of what does not uh what is not a ritual impurity and this and so but it's basically the what some people had kind of categorized as a third category like miscellaneous if you like but this this has still put this under the potential causes of impurities okay and he continues so he's mentioned things like we've said in toxication and so on and apostasy and doubt in now this the doubt
thing here has been argued and it is not necessarily some of the of the Malik argued against it the reason Imam Malik said it was because it was no big deal like in a way like meaning Imam Malik said a person can easily repeat their W what's the problem but what I would say is this is not and we'll find and we'll come across this in the other texts that the Maliki is just like all the mhbs are very much against this type of um waswasa or this OCD type of behavior and what the malikia have this
what they call a that is somebody that has been afflicted by almost OCD and they do not encourage it in fact they they go to extremes really like many of the other Ms in discouraging it so if anybody has if any somebody has these type of thoughts of have I done my like in an slight OCD way even in that case that person should absolutely ignore those thoughts they should not act by them this where IM Malik gave this fatwa was to a person who does not have those type of thoughts maybe just as a one-off
but the real principle of the maab is that certainty is not removed un unless by certainty like it you can only remove certainty with certainty so when you have when I'm certain that I did have W but I'm uncertain that I broke it I'm just thinking did I didn't I really by the principle I would still have W personally I do encourage that uh that that opinion that is by help by many as well Malik and others because the point being to avoid this OCD culture but when im and IM and we'll
notice throughout the maab that is the maab of IM Malik the certainty is not removed unless it's met with certainty but in this Mas the have kind of question why did Imam Malik differ from his normal style here because normally he always refuses anything unless it's met with certainty in here he's saying yeah you know okay doubt repeat your W and they said they ented it from from two angles one they said well you're going to enter Salah which is certain and therefore you should enter it upon certainty but the other angle was and this was what they got a quote from IM Malik where he said it's you know he said it's something which is light it's
not it's not a big deal if a person repeats his W but he wasn't addressing the person who's Afflicted with any thoughts of OCD or was that person strictly should ignore these thoughts okay just to be clear now the next is he says he says to touch the private parts okay touching the genitals or breaks the woodo now especially I mean they're speaking about the male and they're
basing this upon thei that that whosoever kind of touches his private parts or addressing I suppose the wording is addressing men when the prophet Sall said it he said that led him do his W here he then goes into some explanation and like the fah do they they get extremely technical I will mention um I'll kind of translate and then say what many of the later or the other fuk within the maab or the schools have seen of this he translates it like
the fuk do they start to get hypothetical at times they start to get drawing the Realms of the imination which and they start to so he says well he describes he says it must be specifically the palm of the hand and and he says all the fingers or even the side and and he's getting really technical on what the hand could represent and then there's the Mas like the F say okay so what if the person's got a deformity and they've got an extra finger is that part of the hand so as crazy as this sounds but this
is what the f do at times so so he says that's why he's got that in the text he says and even if it's an extra finger the person has as a deformity it is still part of his hand so um he says if it has sensation so this is the translation what and he says okay that's now so that's one Mas stopped there now this generally the Maliki maab does have this View and we and you have seen that look um touching of the
private parts does it repeat wo and yes the general maab will say yes it a person should do wo and then they generally go with what he has said many of them like IIM and including ashab they would say okay should be the palm of the hand and so on and this is what the m the m school um within the Maliki sub schools kind of took the Iraqis kind of had this other approach where they said if pleasure was intended or was found like if a person with the element with the condition of pleasure otherwise none and that is probably the more suitable thing that is what I have
generally kind of gone with I've given the based upon it is also the understanding of s who said that no it doesn't and in line with the does kind of also fall in line with the Hani maab as well so just to kind of answer that that generally what seems like to be a rational type of rational Common Sense take on that is with the intention of pleasure the next absolutely yeah his apparent view was that yeah it didn't absolutely it was just commended to do yeah so the way that the is that even if you don't intend it you
it yeah they don't yeah they don't care they say as long as whether you find it or don't some of them as because the Hadith just says apparently if you've touched your private part so therefore they've taken it just literally what they've done is defined what could be the area of touch so they've kind of defined the hand and said the side of the hand and they've taken that approach whereas the Iraqian took the more approach of like the philosophy behind it so they're referring to direct contact aren't they yeah direct skin to skin yeah because there there is the m of what if it's with a yeah for this generally yes so right okay uh the next
is limps and that is um touch and we're talking about sensual touch and he says if they intended pleasure and they found it then they must repeat and if a person by sensual touch found pleasure even if they didn't intend it they must repeat the wo and if they intended it but still didn't find it or didn't was there was no pleasure but there was this intention they must still do w a simple angle is that because this is a huge what you've got
uh I mean before I explain I'll just finish the sentence did not intend uh pleasure and did not find it either there is no W the reason this is uh important is because this is really a fall between the the Maliki uh between the shaf and the Hani where you've got on one side the Han no matter what type of sensual touch takes place W does not break between the Sha any type of touch with um the opposite sex will break wood so
you've got the mik here really in between where here you can almost see that Iraqi type of mentality of looking into the philosophy kind of like seeping in with they've said look it's to do with pleasure if not just a like a person's walking past and accidentally touches somebody we mean if there was pleasure the W was broken if not then right okay what's the difference between m T right Mass that's it's a good question um they both are to do with touch some have included the reason why I mean
there's two things here one is in linguistic one is why have they use this wording they've used this wording because these are the wordings like lumps is what comes in the Quran when it's referring to uh Central touch and M is what comes in the Hadith when it's referring to touching yourself so they've actually the reason these wordings are used is because of the way they've appeared in the actual Quran and Hadith so they've stuck with the original wordings but there is a a difference there is an overlap as well you could say they're reasonably synonymous as some people have said um does one like lumps does it have more of a sensuality to it it does seem to have that slight
connotation um whereas musk could just be a regular touch as well but I'm not saying that's a definitive but it does carry that type of meaning it's just that with M he said that that breaks with LP introduced no no no no no lumps is essensual touch between two people and mus was where he's talking about touching the private parts of the genitals breaks wood for of the person themselves okay lumps is with another person lumps is with another person although inevitably the same Masala would apply even if it was a different person but they are sticking
with the wording although the the Arabs do they do have a saying in Arabic that that there is no absolute uh there are no absolute synonyms so things do carry different meanings um generally there is an overlap though between lumps and mess but I would say that there is this slight uh connotation of almost like sens like a sensual element with lumps right oh okay
n okay now he's just touching upon those things which do not break wood okay and he's saying that it's not uh he said because he said about touching the genitales he does explain that is not um by touching necessarily other parts uh of your body it's restricted to what the Hadith has actually said so he's mentioned things like it's not by touching the scrotum area it's not by touching the rectum it's not by touching he also mentions things like if because he's mentioned making contact with the
other per with another person um between two people he does mention it's not about young people children so if a person was bathing uh his or her child it's not about uh touching for example if they're kind of Wasing that does not break a person's W he's mentioned it doesn't break by vomiting he's mentioned it doesn't break by eating uh meat camels meat uh it doesn't break by cing or kind of blood letting it that's fuss by kind of like bleeding it doesn't break by laughing in Salah and he said neither
was the masalah of uh when he said touching the genitals or the priv parts does that he says neither was that referring to a woman it was strictly to a man but he then does say although there is some difference that they say that they said that some had said that if there was insertion with a woman then that would break the wo why has he mentioned these M here the reason he's mentioned them is to that these are invalidating factors according to other and other schools of thought so as an example laughing in Salah breaks your woo within the Hani maab bleeding breaks
your wo within the Hani maab eating uh camel meat breaks your woo within the H maab um carrying a dead person breaks your woo According to some MBS and so on and although he didn't mention that here so these things break your W According to some scholar so he's mentioned that it doesn't n next that the different types of water from which you can do
w that he says know that may Allah Grant you success that water is of two categories M mixed and not or you could say contaminated and not contaminated [Music] now right as to that water which is not contaminated then that is what we call learn this this is a uh a ter ology it linguistically means something which repetitively purifies or increasingly
purifies and he says and this is also terminology ma means water in Arabic andl means absolute or categorical so absolute water is always purifying Okay the reason we saidur because in Arabic you will have these words you'll have the word which means pure you will have the word m which means purifying something else so these are important because something can be pure yet it doesn't purify something else and something can be pure and it has the quality of purifying something else and we'll go through some examples
now but if water is noncontaminated and that will include things like rain water sea water you know river water whatever natural resources of water that will be called absolute water okay now that wo will be permitted from this water regardless uh or despite where it came from in terms of whether it was rain water or whether it emerged from the ground as in like Springs and things
like that now [Music] right okay
now he's going to go into the water which is contaminated now we have to explain before we go forward there are certain principles where we are getting this from the Maliki m is quite unique with its approach uh to water and how it deals with it this is really based upon a Hadith which is in the mus of IM Ahmed and Abu da and and uh where the Prophet is asked about a particular well known as in which people would throw um all sorts of nonsense and all sorts of things in there and rubbish and whatnot and and in one particular Hadi the prophet was served water from there or somebody else who served water from the
in one Hadith the prophet just asked about the water and he says he responds by saying that water is always pure and purifying it is not imp purified by anything it is not contaminated by anything now it has an addon section to it theith does kind of there's a further element to it where the Prophet
says except whatever overcame or changed these qualities it's its smell its taste or its color so these are the three qualities of water now whatever changes an external agent which changes one of these qualities will impact the water now I know this this this part of the Hadith um some people have critiqued it from a Hadith perspective but people like abied alari has kind of even said that look the um has accepted this um and practiced according to it so um and he's
got his his in that but anyway coming back to the point now so uh as to that water which has been contaminated one of its three characteristics has changed um why why is it why is it Ma anybody no anybody into Arabic it's grammatical question why is it why is it you know the text
okay me okay n because it's kind of continuing from where and this is uh what is it it's a ju from the co there it's kind of explaining what it is so these three things any of these three qualities color smell um it's whether it's its color smell or taste they change if it changes it's of two types so any water which has been changed by an external agent right that's really important an external we're not talking about naturally found
changes so the other text they write with that which is naturally uh not with that which is normally Inseparable from water so we're not talking about sea water being salty because it naturally is found to be salty we're not talking about like seaweeds changing the color of water and stuff because they're naturally found to be in the sea we're not talking about the river bed river water taking a certain murky color because of the river bed and stuff because that's natural we're talking about where an external element has changed the water so if you got water now and chucked a whole loot
of salt in it and changed it if you spiled a drink into it that is an external agent so we're not talking about naturally found elements water once it's been changed one of its three qualities it is of two categories one uh it changes it is mixed with something impure somebody there's some water something impure spills into it okay some people might say blood some people might say alcohol some might say urine something impure has been has contaminated this water the water has
actually changed so this water is impure or you cannot do W with it and if it didn't change so imagine some alcohol fell into this barrel of water but apparently the water still looks like water you can't tell nothing's changed you try and drink it to see if you get intoxicated doesn't work so he
realize if the water was a small amount like let's just say it's a small container and you definitely know something impure dropped in it and it was you know a small amount it's not impacted it it's better not to do woodoo from this if it hasn't changed any of the qualities but if you did it would still be valid because the Maliki M has a unique approach that it only looks at the qualities of water if they don't change the water is still valid okay this is the m of the m and this is what the Med the med school within and so on have kind of gone with but I suppose we don't need those differences
right now why they say so if if you don't do it you're rewarded okay why they say Kara because according to almost all the other schools of thought that W is invalid right because so they would be strictly against so what they're saying is that look if you've got an option you've got other water so I've got let's say I've got two buckets of water here I've got I've got water and I'm about to use this bucket of water but right now uh Along Comes A kid some countries and urinates in or something now you've got that now but apparently it's not changed the water or let's say something some blood fell in there but it didn't change it just
dissipated now if you still use that even though you've got other water it is Mak but the W would still be valid but it's better not to do it because there's too much around it you see what I mean unless sorry yes if you like that's another debate which we'll go into someday in right the body of water is large if the yeah I mean if it was because large even the other mhbs accept with a difference amongst them what defines large so the Hani M maybe this the size of this room isn't even
categorized as large according to them um the Sha probably a large barrel will suffice as large they say you know if it reaches this measurement of what the says but the Malik don't have a measurement they just say look the W is still fine if the qualities haven't changed but it's better not to use it if you've got the water is subjective yeah would be subjective normally I'll tell you what they'll be kind of talking about would probably be something like a small bucket or something like that that's what would be at what they'll generally be talking
[Music] about um right okay um right and if it mix and if it's mixed with something pure and then it changes if what it was
if if the thing which contaminated it was something which can normally be separated remember that point I mentioned like we're not talking about like salt in in the sea and stuff like this because that can't normally be separated so if it's something which can be like soap soap falls into a bucket of water it gets all soapy now or it kind of influence it kind of impacts it in terms of its color or its taste now this is something which you can normally avoid so therefore this mentions like coloring well words like rose water Ain like he he says like
people like flow getting into water I'm not talking about flowers but flour like cooking flour then this water is pure in itself like you can drink it you can use it for stuff but it cannot purify because it's lost its essential qualities so let's say somebody spill a bottle of seven up into a bucket of water now that water would still be pure like you could still drink it you could still use it you could but you couldn't use it for worship purposes it
wouldn't be purifying in a ritual sense okay does that make sense what if it was something like soil which can be used to pufy itself or sun no if it's not naturally found unless it was natur like in a riverbed where it's naturally found it's if it's in its natural setting then it's okay if it's an external agent like if you've got a bucket of water somebody come CH salt uh soil in there that would make it I mean it couldn't purify that would contaminate it but you could still use it to for example to wash yeah I mean you could it's still pure like you could use it to whatever you're doing you know
you could feed it to give it to animals you could do this you could do that you could do whatever you're trying to do with it clean up the house you could do stuff with it you could even clean yourself with it but I'm not saying you like if imagine all your water became you I don't know you drop all your shower gel in there so all of it now is is you know soapy you can still use it on yourself but will it be ritually cleansing it won't ritually you'll still have to do your woo with normal water but you can use that still now uh right if uh did we read past that he says you can use it for cooking
and cleaning and so on and drinking you don't use it in worship which I just mentioned you read that yeah oh you didn't okay now [Music] [Music]
yeah right okay if the water he just said what half of which we just said before if it's if it's you can use it for your everyday things you can use it for which are kind of translated for your uh whether it's consuming or whatever but you can't use it for worship purposes however he says if it's something which is inseparable from it naturally in its
natural setting he gives the example of like things like seaweed or mud or stuff like this or or water which flows over certain minerals or whether it flows over um he's mentioned things like sulfur and other things and if it takes up this type of taste to it um that's still fine because it's in its natural setting okay um um the obligations of the obligations of
and [Music] for
right okay the thing is the obligations of w he's mentioned them to be seven quite popularly that is a popular number some of them disagree in the numbers it doesn't really make a difference you'll notice they kind of agree in the principle of what they're saying anyway some have said them as six some have said it as eight and we'll kind of cover this type of stuff in more detail when we come back to it in the other texts okay he mentions them to be seven that you know what you're doing so you can't be doing this sleepwalking you can't be just I just you know what oh yeah earlier this morning I went for a
swim oh yeah so now I've got wo I take it like if you didn't like you must have an intention you must definitely have the intention by the time you're washing the face you should really have it before you begin but I'm just saying because that's where the obligations begin the four actions which are mentioned in the Quran which are the washing of the face the hands to the elbows the wiping over the head and the feet these are the four obligatory actions the only four according to the Hani M but these are the four basic obligations in addition to that you must have intention theth which is
in um this this Hadith makes intentions obl obligatory then uh he mentions Al is that there must be what some people call Ma and I know there's some dispute and we'll realize I know is of the opinion this really could be more of the Sunnah and not really and we'll come through this as we reach um other type of um we reach the other texts but the thing is that f means um kind of like succession
like continuity like immediate continu so as an example it does make sense I would say it does make sense to a reasonable amount so let's say somebody begins his wood there's a knock on the door he goes downstairs opens the door or there's a phone call gets distracted goes in front of the TV sits down now 4 hours later gets up and says oh yeah I did half my woodo anyway let's continue from where I left off that would be invalid a person there must be relative succession you can be interrupted it doesn't mean it's got to be like go you
know like oh like I bre do I breathe in between right damn let's start again you know it's like so it can't be like one of those there can be relative type of breaks in between meaning like if like let's just say if a person did the phone rang or a person kind of put put something there or did something this is all normal it doesn't it's it's it's neglect it's negligible so as long just use common sense basically okay that's what it is is an interesting one because many of the don't mention it like and um other don't but is where you
kind of wipe over um and there are obviously some of the uh the badi that did say wasn't necessary but we'll go through these differences later on but Del is where you're kind of wiping over so you washing your face but you're wiping over now this some of the malikia really take get confused on this because they take this to mean like cuz that can mean like rubbing and so people might like almost have what what is like I don't know like a sandpaper effect on they they think they've got to kind of let me rub and
let me distort more like I think I don't rub it properly and God damn it skin still on there let me try and rip it off that isn't the point really D what they meant by this was just as opposed to like if I let's say there's water here and I just dipped my hand in the water and took it out there is a difference in Arabic linguistically between Anda is to dip to immerse something is to wash Allah
says wash your face wash your hands you don't say dip so now we just do what the verse says and part of the verse is that when you're washing something you know washing usually involves like IM wiping over like as in like I'm washing something I'm going like that that's washed that's all it is take this extremely like take a sometimes I have to tell people just chill out don't worry about it this people get so obsessed the amount of times I have to tell people about D it becomes it really does become worrisome
that's why I'm emphasizing it D does not mean although it does mean linguistically it can mean a rubbing they don't mean by a rubbing like a rubbing they just mean by taking the hand over with with contact so you're kind of going like this really which is which which is what everybody does in wo so it's normal and just keep it at that okay and then these are the seven but if a person had a beard it mentions that you should kind of go through now what he has mentioned here is one of the opinions there is another opinion of IM Malik where he didn't go
through he didn't say about the um which I believe and other Malik have kind of transmitted but that you you don't have to kind of go through but even if you do it's recommend it's not an obligation anyway what he does mention is if you've got a very light beard or next to nothing then and the skin is is almost showing then in that case you should kind of wipe over like try and get the water to penetrate okay um and yep so likewise he's mentioned the fingers and these are he's not talking about the toes by the way he talking about the fingers of the hand you need
to kind of make sure that the water gets in between them because that's a reasonable Gap obviously so as opposed to toes which is not necessarily the same okay now
okay as to the of then they are [Music] eight that washing the hands first of all to the wrists and it's is Rec nowadays obviously our W is different people traditionally did things from like a bucket or some or some on a container so in that case it would be recommended to wash your hands before you kind of put them in there so maybe you'd get something or you'd kind of pour wash your hands first before you dip your hands into the bucket but nowadays obviously using Taps and stuff like that it's not as relevant what you do is you'd begin with washing your
hands to the wrists um while rinsing your mouth um cleaning the nose just means obviously just removing like clearing out your nose so you've kind of like so one is kind of is almost like taking water in like cleaning the nose with water and kind of like uh removing anything that you've got in your nose from uh with the water included some people do not many of the Do Not separate those by the ways uh they just say sometimes it's just cleaning the
nose is suffices bringing back the wipe so when you wipe your hair right that's the the obligation bringing it back is the Sunnah wiping the the apparent of the ears is so obviously where you're doing the apparent people there has been some dispute what does the apparent mean mean and what does the hidden part of the ear mean cuz some have said is the apparent this on top and the hidden that
underneath or is the hidden that within and the apparent that over the I mean both ways I mean just don't worry about it too much the point is that they're generally talking about what is within the actual ear hole if you like and the type of ear whatever the technical term for it is uh around surrounding yeah so you just wipe off having fresh water for that is also a Sunnah but don't sweat it on an OCD level like sometimes people say like I get questions sometimes like I don't renew the water for the you know for the mus on the ears don't worry
about it I mean if you can but that is a Sunnah like if you do do it it's good right okay and keeping the the obligations in the order so not beginning with the feet and then doing the face that is a Sunnah having the sequence and sometimes people may have to reverse the order depending on I'm just saying sometime people have because of circumstances but the area behind yours is that is that part of W uh no no the W is he he'll go through uh okay in this he in this text and the
others will'll see um it it starts from what will be the forward will go around the malikia don't even actually include and this has been a bit controversial but the malikia don't actually include even sometimes this what is behind the Sideburn type of thing to be part of the face but generally I would say I do sometimes to keep things smooth and easy I do say sometimes like uh a definition used by many of the F some of the Malik even by the other Ms more where they say you know this starting from that where this type of part of the year what kind of protrudes the anything before that to
the other one and from the top of the forehead right to the chin is the face and that's a bit simple although the malikia do say oh what's behind the Sideburn doesn't really count it's called what's what's so they don't really include it but I would say just to be on the safe side that you just wash over whatever you know and people will generally understand what the face is now um did we do all of that no no uh yeah and as to its
virtues the sequence of sometimes people have uh they break the sequence the woodoo is still valid but it shouldn't be done un like just for the sake of it now
right okay the virtues of he has mentioned them as seven saying really the Mal have just said just saying is enough and you don't even have to say they don't but some have said okay you could say the Mal generally don't recognize the other duas and stuff to be part of w and don't recognize them as recommended throughout the W um so it's saying bah at the beginning having a clean place where you're doing wo naturally once again going with this theme of not being prescriptive or not
defining limits the malakis have this theme they don't like to Define limits keep things natural but they say use the least minimum amount of water but we're not being descriptive in how much so we're not going to say half a liter or this we're not going to tell you how much we know that the prophet sallallah alaihi wasallam used a mud which is this much by the way guys approximately use that for all his W so you know and sometimes people think oh okay that's for the first washing of the face what's next that's for the rinsing of the
mouth what's what's next right so that was for the mud now technically you could if a person used less they use lessan obviously has a point here notan but Shan the the Maliki who says well you know nobody's better than the prophet and he kind of declared that invalid saying anybody uses less than that then they're trying to think that they're better than the prophet so he had a little issue with him but uh anyway generally the maab says there's no limit but you use don't kind of be excessive and you should try and use the least amount of water
now uh sorry were you reading or have you read you've read yeah okay yeah so placing the container on the right hand side obviously today if it's open because if it isn't open you're going to have to pour it with the left so you might put it on the left hand side but nowadays obviously with Taps it doesn't necessarily mean by the way you have to stand have the tap on your right hand side I'm just saying don't go don't kind of we don't have to go pedantic and become all like weird with the dean and stuff the washing over of the second and third time by the way the Malik IM Malik in the M you'll see that he actually does inar of when he's asked two or
three times like how many times to you know the actually Begins the the chapter of the with he says in he said like what are you talking about Imam Malik had this type of attitude a type of Personality that he didn't like getting def definitive or becoming all descriptive with numbers regarding certain things he don't like that he don't like this type so a lot of times when people say sh do is two two times three times you would just tell them off so so this was almost the personality of the IM it is it does come in the Hadith that the prophet did w and
he did it all the second time the third time it does come in some Hadith it says just two times some it says he did a third we recognize them as virtues the main thing is what we call when im Mal did in the he said as long as the person has made sure he's washed what he's washed that's all that really concerns us so basically we've got to have this natural mentality of I'm doing W the main thing is this done okay if I do it again fair enough second time but third time what but it's not about those numbers it's about getting the thing done done and it's not about being uh
prescriptive with numbers okay by the way you're not allowed to definitely increase over three it's considered a um right okay um that when you're doing your you begin there uh as opposed to beginning there because there is some confusion sometimes no the m is only once it's the shaf that kind of says up to three times for that the malakis and the hanis recognize it just as once so just over but he's saying beginning from the front
is The Virtuous thing as opposed to beginning from there and coming back and water to touch your skull your skin or your hair or you mean the skin yeah does it I I've heard that it has to go past the hair and actually touch your your hair just sufficient no I mean no it just has to it's m it's not it's not washing it's just wiping so you just wipe over and the malikia say You must have you must go over generally most ahead so just going like this won't do so person goes whereas according to the Sha is going like even this is valid which
is anyway so but the point is that the hania have up to like a third of the head and the malikia say Allah says you know wipe over your your heads and so he's mentioned Allah has mentioned head so we go over the head okay now um and Mis which is um also recommended at this stage I think we should kind of or should we we can continue to or we can leave it at this stage leave it okay I mean
we'll inallah well should we actually just do it saying that it's not that huh um no then it'll leave but we could do with Salah let's do there's not much in there so let's just uh read over it now [Music] so
right okay translation so he's first of all I'm going to say what he's saying and then just tell you a simpler way of understanding so the obligations are five he says intention completely immersing the water the body uh into not completely immers but completely covering the body with water so every part of the body has made contact with water um that's what they call right completely covering the body with water wiping over the the
body um which was what we've had before also called that it's consecutive there's a there isn't like with no interludes and no breaks basically and kind of uh penetrating the hair really with with your fingers going through so making sure that water's got there now the simple way to what he's saying just make sure water gets everywhere simple there is no him wording really that is just saying the same thing um it's really
just that's all he really had to say that just covering the body with water so you've kind of and you're obviously going to wipe over but wiping over everywhere isn't necessary you didn't have to say that because you can't wipe over over it anyway like unless you're some type of super gymnast or acrobat that you're going to be because then they they have this Masala okay what about wiping wife you can't reach your back should you call somebody to scrub your back for you or so this is the it gets to this extent that obviously people then start questioning and the point is obviously not and some people say okay but should you have like a cloth which you can use the cloth to
wipe the back and can you and so the point is that just relax remember the the spirit of the M was always about keeping things natural yes you just make sure water gets everywhere that includes the hair that includes the body and that's it and obviously you wipe over wherever is natural that's it you don't have to do know type of like like you know abnormal stuff you just do whatever is normal that's all you don't have as an obligation rinsing your mouth and clean you know rinsing out your nose cleaning your nose
and so on like the Hani M does or so that's different no uh okay right as to um okay the sun of of he's mentioned four so this is before you begin you've wiped uh you've washed your hands and
this is once again going back to the classical because you're going to dip your hand in the bucket nowadays you're probably going to stand under a shower so it's not not really too much of an issue but this was more about purity back then rinsing the mouth and cleaning the nose these are sun why because these you see the thing that the principle is you must wash that which is apparent that which is apparent that which is hidden is not necessarily an obligation this is why we mentioned about when we said like let's say washing the feet for wo that which is
apparent but what's between let's say your toes like because they generally remain closed will take the ruling of the Hidden whereas the fingers of the hand generally remain open so it doesn't take necessarily the ruling of the Hidden whereas now things like what's inside your mouth inside your nose inside your ears these type of things are hidden so they don't take the ruling of the apparent and they take a more lenient ruling in the sense that it's not obligatory to wash them okay so he said rinsing the mouth clean the nose washing
like the like going you know the inner ear really that's um that's recommended not having the the the medical type of rinse out but but just generally that's good it's virtue so we've had the obligation the Sun and other virtues [Music] now [Music]
okay see the word theam that where you kind of done a good a thorough job of like a good job of but now I'm coming back to its virtues of six first of all by washing away any impurities this is the by the way we're speaking about he didn't mention upon what becomes obviously obligatory and this with either sexual relationships with either um uh a wet dream either um
having finished a menstrual cycle or either having embraced Islam that upon I know this but generally for that one so now these things would necessitate now it begins with saying one The Virtuous acts is you remove any impurities then he says to do your woo and your woodoo here can just be one mons it doesn't have to be the full you know the three times and so on and and then he says Begin by washing the upper body then the lower body this just common sense his teaching obviously you begin let's say a person's got impure or they've got other stuff they're washing
lower body then you start with carbon it comes everything just pouring back on yourself so you'll realize a lot of is teaching people common sense and remember this began by teaching young people children the prophet sallallah alaihi wasallam said in a Hadith I am like you or to you as a father is to his
children I teach you everything and he said like meaning including going to the toilet even and then he said you know when you go to the toilet don't um you know do this these are the and the and the whole thing and so the dean is about teaching everything and there and it's about remember these people would be sometimes children learning and you teach them sometimes what is common sense to grown-ups so okay removing that uh any imper starting with the upper part of the body then the lower part like washing the head at least almost three times today it may be
different because like I said in the context of showers and stuff but if you were pouring over you'd probably pour over about three times that would generally do it you see what I mean so beginning with the right hand side before so if you're washing your hands you'd begin with the right hand before it doesn't mean you'd start just the right hand side of the body and now the left hand it just means the right part before the left so if it if you're washing your feet you'd start with the right foot then the left foot that's all it means okay so um and using not being excessive in your water but doing a good thorough
job okay so that's so so keeping you know doing a good thorough washing but not being excessive and there's a distinction between and is washing and is like like a bath or like this is but is just washing over anything you could be doing you could be washing anything dishes thish that you could be doing whatever clothes but is like taking a bath in that sense Okay so and he kind of ends that by saying that leaves us with which we can
continue next session and going to Salah hopefully conclude a considerable amount
