Benefits of not belonging to a sect - Mufti Abu Layth al-Maliki

The other important point is I don't belong to a sect. Now, I can't overstress the value that brings to a table. I'm honestly telling you, you know, when you're not part of any sect, you're not like you're not kind of Deobandi, Barelvi, Salafi, Sufi, Ikhwan, you're nothing like that.

Then you have no allegiance to a groupthink mentality. All you then need is for something to make sense to you. Like I don't fear a group backlash against me. If I was to say something. The difference with all these other scholars is they first fear their own community.

Then I know wallahi, I know many scholars who hold so many different opinions to their group, but will never express them because they're so scared to to become dissed and excommunicated by their own group. This is how This is the problem with sectarianism. So it's not that these other ulama can't maybe see what I say, but it's that they belong to a sect.

So if you are a Sufi, for example, part of a particular tariqa, if you are a Salafi following Bin Baz and Albani and all these people or Rabi' al-Madkhali or if you are a Deobandi following the ulama of Deoband or if you are Barelvi following only your Barelvi ulama, the problem is you have to go against them.

And that people cannot do. That is the the biggest issue. So this is something that alhamdulillah that, you know, I am so grateful to Allah that he allowed me, gave me the guidance and the insight to learn from all groups but to never become affiliated with a group. And that way I can Now it's all about just making sense to me.

If this group say something it makes sense alhamdulillah I'll embrace it. You know, if it's in line with the Quran Sunnah as understood through reason as the school of Al Madinah have taught us.
