**Topics:** Dawah and debate culture; Character and virtue

**Summary (not a quotation; machine-made, unchecked):** Mufti Abu Layth says he wronged Dawah Man by picking on him repeatedly although Dawah Man never publicly criticised him, breaking his own rule, and he wishes him well despite their differences.

## Longer summary

Mufti Abu Layth recalls that a week earlier, while distracted on his phone at the gym, he saw something that set him thinking about dawah and about Dawah Man. He says their world views are polarised and each surely disagrees strongly with the other, but that his principle has generally been to criticise only people who had publicly criticised him, and that he picked on Dawah Man on many occasions although Dawah Man never publicly said anything about him. He describes meeting him once, at a charity conference around 2014, when Dawah Man was less well known and spoke very kindly about Mufti just before he went on. He says he felt in his heart that he had wronged him and had departed from his own principle, so he is saying so publicly. He adds that each is entitled to his views and that he hopes Dawah Man changes his, as others hope he changes his own, and closes with a prayer that God bless him and keep him smiling.

## Transcript (machine tier, 0:00–4:05)

[0:00] last week i was speaking on i suppose wrongness i i can't remember what i was looking at and maybe some i think was it a video somebody sent me or was it on a news feed and dawa man right so yeah so a little message for that one you know i i saw i can't remember what it was now it was last week i think it may have just been a picture of something and i was at the gym

[0:40] and you know when you get distracted and you're looking at the you start looking at your messages you start looking at your social media and i was distracted and you know the pre-workout is in and the pre-workout some of these oh my god they make you proper emotional as well so you get into the zone and i was going through these things and i saw something and it just triggered my thoughts about dawah

[1:07] and i thought to myself you know what i feel that i feel in my way i wronged because i i thought about it and i thought you know what i disagree with him obviously polarized world views and i'm sure he disagrees massively as you can imagine with me but i felt you know what i had a principle that usually i used to only criticize people who'd publicly criticized me generally for the most part i mean

[1:46] that's and i i think that's for the most part i generally stood by that as as far as i can recall but there was dawa man who i i thought you know i did really uh you know did pick on him on many occasions and to be fair he never publicly ever said anything about me so yeah and i just felt you know in my heart i just felt yeah i wronged him you know honestly i and i

[2:25] and i had this kind of sense of emotion overcome me it was strange because i thought to myself you know i think i've only met him once we were years ago we were at a charity conference it must have been 2014 or something and he he was he was popular but not as popular as he became so he had a shorter beard and i'd never i had no idea who he was and somebody said to me he's somebody who used to rap or do these kind of things and he's become practicing and the young people really like him and i remember he went on just before me

[3:04] and he said some very nice words about me i have to say very nice words like he he spoke really high and this is obviously going back then but and i thought to myself you know here's somebody that i did actually go on so i i felt that and i thought you know what if i remember i'm gonna say this publicly so you know despite whatever differences of views which obviously is entitled and everybody's entitled and i'm entitled to have my views but yeah man i i sense his way in love and may allah keep him smiling i mean i hope you know obviously our views i hope he changes his views

[3:44] i'm sure people hope i change my views but i did feel i felt he has came off my principle and so if he gets to watch this i'll cut i'll try and cut it out as a slip that may allah bless you and keep you smiling
